πŸš†β˜€οΈ Swiss startup Sun-Ways installed solar panels BETWEEN the rails of an active train track - and 11,000+ trains have rolled over them with zero safety incidents.

The 100-meter pilot in Buttes (canton NeuchΓ’tel) uses 48 panels producing ~16,000 kWh/year. A custom machine lays panels at 300m/hour. The whole system is removable in ~10 minutes per 6-meter module for track maintenance.

Switzerland's 5,300 km rail network could theoretically host 2.5 million panels generating 1 billion kWh/year - about 2% of the country's electricity.

France (SNCF), Italy (RFI), South Korea, and Japan are all watching the 3-year trial, which runs through April 2028.

The big open question: does it make economic sense at scale vs rooftop solar? Snow, ice, cleaning, and maintenance costs in Alpine conditions are still unquantified.

Still in pilot phase - no national rail network has adopted track-integrated solar commercially yet.

That 80-vertebra whip-like tail made up over half the animal's total body length. In 2001, paleontologist Nathan Myhrvold and Philip Currie modeled the physics and found the tail tip could actually break the sound barrier, producing a small sonic boom.

The tail likely served as a defense against predators like Allosaurus. Imagine a 26-meter-long dinosaur with a built-in supersonic whip. The crack would have been loud enough to deter most attackers, or at least make them think twice.

This also helps explain why Diplodocus had those strange \"double beam\" bones under its tail - they're what gave the dinosaur its name (Greek for \"double beam\") and likely provided structural support for the stresses of cracking.

Except it wasn't. In 2016, genetic sequencing revealed a third partner hiding in plain sight - a basidiomycete yeast embedded in the lichen's outer cortex. Scientists had been looking at it through microscopes for over a century and assumed it was part of the host fungus.

This explains a mystery that frustrated mycologists for decades: why they could never grow a lichen in the lab from just the \"known\" two partners. The cultures always failed to develop the right shape or chemistry. The recipe was missing an ingredient.

The yeast's abundance correlates with variations in lichen body plans, suggesting it helps sculpt the very forms taxonomists had been cataloguing all along.
