It does the same things, just fancier or in some ways better (bigger portable displays). Could it replace some of those other devices? Maybe, but it’s also apparently heavy on the head/uncomfortable before long, has a mere 2-hr battery life, and isolates you from others that may be around.

\nMy mom used a Windows laptop for years and then two years ago got her first ever tablet - a Kindle Fire HD 10”. She LOVES it and has more than once exclaimed to me how she never uses her laptop anymore except for like one thing with PowerPoint. So the tablet is her computer for 99% of her needs/wants. And despite the tablet not being a 100% laptop-replacement (b/c of that one Windows task), she is 100% a tablet-computer user and is Kindle Fire-first. She likes it more than her Samsung Galaxy phone.
\nI won’t call a Kindle Fire a “baby tablet.” But I also won’t call it a serious laptop-replacement, at least for myself. Yet it effectively replaced my mom’s laptop. (I don’t know if it matters that the types of tasks she’s doing are the casual consumer kind.)
\nHope that’s at least half-usable perspective.
\nI think I understand being disappointed that the iPad isn’t more/better than it now is (but then what line must be crossed to say the iPad is finally a “real computer?” Xcode on iPad?) And on the other hand, the iPad is indeed more/better than it’s ever been; it’s just not an exact match to a Mac (but it’s not meant to be, so???).
\nAnd I think I understand being disappointed that the iPad is (mis-)labeled with pejoratives (unfairly or unjustly).

\nYour points hit home. I also think that Apple will continue to refine and expand iPadOS over the coming years. If its pace continues (think of the last 3 years of new iPad features), then in the next 3 years, the iPad will just be even more capable. Eventually, the debate about whether it can replace a laptop will fade.
\nIt’s easier to start simple and add complexity than to begin complex and try to make it easier. iPad’s advantage is it started with iPhoneOS, as simple as can be, yet was based on OS X. Apple added copy/paste when ready, and years later added Stage Manager with floating windows. What’s next?

\nI think you’re right that there’s no perfect or ideal window management. I do particularly like the auto-tile options in Windows 11 but live without it on my Mac.
\nAs I’ve said, I really liked the simple Split View with Slide Over as, like you and many others I’m sure, I rarely needed more than two or three windows at once (one working, one or two reference).
\nI’m glad there are many options overall. But on iPad, Apple has the challenge of providing several options to casual and power users while not overcomplicating it for anyone.
