@jw thanks. I make fun of myself using the same term, even now. And yeah, it was nice when such convenient, self-mocking terms had less of a cultural sting or stigma.

A friend recommended this book Tribe, by Sebastian Junger (the guy who made Restrepo), and it helped crystallize some thinking about a (hopefully) more humble approach to all the pejorative divisiveness suffusing so much of our culture. Wish I’d come across it 4 years ago when it came out.

Re: my use of “snowflake”: Please accept my apologies. I started using it lately in an adult sense, applying it to adults who apply it fairly freely to anyone they offend, but who are themselves offended by things that grown adults should view with more compassion. But your point is taken, and I must admit, the use of an opprobrious term to cause opprobrium is fairly hypocritical on my part. I will amend my ways.

To reply to what I’m reading into your response (and correct me if I’m going off the rails!): there is no conflict between faith and reason.

\n

We can’t love the Wisdom of God made manifest and simultaneously struggle against the search for wisdom. We can’t love as Christ taught, and hate people who are searching for understanding. This is the overwhelming example of the apostles, the fathers, and the saints down to this day.

\n

In other words: Christianity has never struggled with philosophy.

\n

So what to make of the American Protestant (and, to a much milder extent, American Roman Catholic) struggle against philosophy, against science and the modern scientific method, against reason?

\n

In other words, why do we see a rejection of learning about ideas among American Protestants?

\n

Not everyone: my extended family is evidence enough that there is plenty of curiosity and thirst for knowledge among Protestants, with Ph.D.s and other advanced degrees and classical bona fides. (I married a preacher’s daughter.) But mainstream Evangelical Protestantism is blatantly anti-intellectual, and mainline Protestantism’s continued reliance on thinkers like Lewis and Bonhoeffer, or derivatives from them, is more support for my contention than it is evidence of any intellectual vitality or ferment.

\n

In the main, however, the only times I have to worry about who among the Orthodox might clutch their pearls at a reference to evolutionary theory during a question about something in, say, Evagrius, is in a room full of Protestant converts, or in a Facebook forum full of Russians (who are mostly converts, anyway). Similarly, the only Catholics who struggle with this tend to be Protestant converts, too; or possibly RadTrads whose philosophy starts with Thomas Aquinas’ early work, and ends with the Summa Theologica.

Anyway, that’s what was underlying my observation about places like Liberty University, and cultural institutions like American Protestantism.

And if you don’t tell me how I’m wrong, I’m going to be disappointed. :)
