Francis also can’t resist a psychological framing. He closes the book: “It may be that at the heart of the Shaker experience lies one woman’s inability to cope with the loss of her own children, and through bereavement to embark on a course that led her to become Mother to thousands.” Which is lovely in its way, and also obvious to our 21st century worldview. I’m with you though: it can’t be just that. It’s clear from the accounts of the people around her that there was a fierce power she possessed that can’t just be a coping mechanism. Appeals to psychology are ringing empty for me these days. Not exactly wrong but very insufficient.
