@JohnBrady It’s being compared to that book by everyone, to be sure. Though I read Elegy back when it came out, I barely recall anything about it so I’m not a good judge. But this book doesn’t feel referential–and politics are only a minor part of it.

Finished reading All That’s Unseen: An Appalachian Memior by Emilee Hackney. Holy crap, what a book. I haven’t been that engrossed in a book in a long time. Highly recommended.

@JohnBrady When we checked years ago there was one cemetery in Bloomington that allowed it but it would have felt, I don’t know, random to be buried there. No connections. Hopefully I have a few more years for it to catch on here in town! :)

@JohnBrady That’s all interesting, and a bit surprising that the funeral director was okay with that. Rachel and I would love to have what’s now trendily called a “green” burial (which is probably similar to what you’re describing) but it’s hard to find those options around here.

To this day, I’ve never been to an Appalachian funeral where there wasn’t a preacher and a sermon.

It’s the same around here. I keep hearing that cremation is now the majority practice but I can count on one hand the number of services or memorials I’ve attended that involved a cremated body. Here, the body is almost always in an open casket and the funeral service always has a preacher, who preaches a sermon well more than half the time. Elsewhere funerals may have changed a lot over the years but my experience of them is essentially unchanged since childhood.

@jaheppler People love to hate the Marvel movies, often to prove they’re not one of the hoi polloi. But they actually were great fun through Endgame. (Since then it’s been mostly downhill.) Part of what made it so fun was that we were part of a friend group with kids about the same age and we all went to the movies together. Great memories.

@ReaderJohn My blue Thompson Chain Reference I carried to camp meetings and revivals all over the country east of the Mississippi is still the only one I read. :) I’ll occasionally pull out the Oxford Annotated NRSV but, for better or worse, the Thompson KJV just is the Bible to me. My dad’s Bible is also a Thompson, with those after market sticky tabs that let you quickly turn to the different books. I always took a bit of silent pride in not needing those, having memorized the books of the Bible is Sister Barb’s Sunday School class.

@JohnBrady Thanks for posting the link and thanks for your comments! Nostalgia has been a dominant cultural mood for some time now (see: all the movie/TV remakes and reboots) and there’s been plenty of commentary on that. When I talk about some of the topics you mention with my friends, then immediately reach for the concept of nostalgia, and the inevitable “kids these days” attitude of the aging. In one sense, I don’t blame them; it’s the ideas they have to hand. At the same time, I find myself resisting that characterization. This may be because I want to think I’m more serious than that. Still, I think what you and I are talking about isn’t nostalgia or “kids these days.” Speaking for myself, I feel a draw from the past in some real way. I don’t think I’m idealizing it; I’m quite aware there are plenty of ways that everyday life has improved. The past, though, seems to hold possibilities that aren’t present today. I’m not explaining myself well but I’m sure you know what I mean.

First day of school around here. It’s nice to see the buzz of activity again. Kids walking in their first day of school outfits. Big yellow buses rolling around town. I love these cycles of life. Even the neighborhood cat Ralph was enjoying it as she sat with some kids waiting for their bus.
