I recently found out that macOS sometimes keeps snapshots of wallpapers in a wallpapers cache folder, which can grow significantly, 51 GB in my case.
The folder is called \"com.apple.wallpaper.caches\", and is nested deep under the hidden \"private\" folder.
Worth checking.
