@frjon This is encouraging to read a someone who taught in the DFW at a Christian private school. Hands-down the best way to invest in education is striking that balance in your approach: realistic revenue efforts and a place where students/faculty are known.

Ultimately, @ablerism, that “being and becoming known” is what I want for my students and co-workers (and my child when the time comes for school), and I sense we will have to be both flexible and committed, understanding that uncertainty is just part of that tension. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@ablerism This is helpful, Sara, thanks so much for sharing. This is a teaching question: Could you say more about how the vocabulary lists work in your classrooms? I have a list I use for “visual literacy” for helping students have words at hand for talking about what they see in images or objects that (I hope) turns into a learning aid that students can add/refer to on their own as the course continues…

@ablerism Maybe I can offer something you can take and make your own. Have you considered making “Reasonable Arguing” a learning community standard/outcome/practice? To @ayjay ’s point, the lack of self-awareness can be addressed individually, but it can also be addressed corporately under the common practice or goal. “Formative assessment” can occur on the way to meeting that goal: for example, when looking at a text I have students come up with 1 question and 1 comment in response. Then we sit in a circle (or break into groups, depending on your class size/atmosphere). Going around the circle one by one, students share their question and comment, and their neighbor has to either respond to the question or add their own comment. For me, as the teacher, this is my low-stakes moment to 1. push back against “this text has a spooky vibe” critiques 2. model reasonableness for the students 3. assess where the students are in their formation of our common goal, and what needs more practice.

@ablerism I teach composition classes; the majority of students in my courses are either engineering or architecture/planning or business students. @ayjay I experienced this parking situation in a downtown setting before a concert. I had to drive out of the city to find a bathroom, and once downtown without a smartphone I ended up calling my wife and she found a way to pay for parking online from home. It was a weird frustration I didn’t expect to experience.

@ayjay thanks for sharing this. This is a big frustration for me as a professor who—if I want to show a video or have a presentation—has to have my phone to log on to the class computer. If there’s one place I want to keep my phone away from it’s the classroom. Maybe I’ll ask them to dig up a transparency projector for me from the basement.
