I would read the book first, because the movie is sort of a ‘70’s take-off on the ‘50’s book. Chandler, the books’s author, famously said “Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. If there were enough like him, I think the world would be a very safe place to live in, and yet not too dull to be worth living in.” At this point, Apple fans are beginning to suspect that Tim Cook is both tarnished and afraid, and if the world he is helping to create is both unsafe and somewhat dull. (But the film is a good reminder that the world changes, and that our heroes of yesterday don’t always hold up so well in the world we are faced with today.)

One of the things I like about micro.blog and the Indie Web in general is that it hearkens back to the egalitarian values of the early Web, giving everyone an equal voice and chance to be heard. But most people – and definitely most journalists – do not share those values. Instead they are more interested in who’s building the biggest pyramid, and who will end up first and biggest in a mad scramble to the top. (P.S.: I fnd my little Mac app Notenik has a similar problem, flying under the radar of apps like Obsidian.) But then I think it’s probably also true that some of us are better and more interested in continuing to make a better product than in spending time promoting our achievements to the press.

Any number of things could upset various apple carts at any moment.

As others have noted, all of the authoritative sources (Wikipedia, Daring Fireball, the Markdown Guide, etc.) capitalize it. And I still consider Markdown to be a proper noun. While it is true that there are many variants of Markdown, they are all plainly called Markdown variants. And they all share, not just a common function, but a shared syntax. So it is not like Kleenex or Xerox, where other products with similar functions are often loosely described with the name of the most popular or the original product. If we were talking about “Markdown” being used loosely to describe all lightweight markup languages, then that would be a different case. But that is not what is happening here. Nobody uses “Markdown” to describe Textile, for example.
