I came to work with them, roughtly a year ago, having avoided them like the plague, as I only say the hype. After 40 years in engineering/computing, I have seen a LOT of hype. And - it is still a LOT of hype. Which fails to even show the strengths, and weaknesses of these systems.
For me, first person pronouns are part of natural language, and it's the fact that I can converse in my own natural language that makes this an accessible interface, for me. And with my AuDHD, it's just like talking to another neurodivergent person, just one that happens to be a computer, but one with whom I do not have to be so precise, and can synthesise meaning, and intent, from my totally ADHD brain-dumps.
The two problems that stand out to me, are the training, and I won't even expand on this here, because it's a BIG area, but it involves the quality of their traning sources, and, moreso, the human component of post-training, RLHF (Reiinforced Learning, from Human Feedback). This is where the biases of their post-trainers get baked into the models that people encounter, as they are trained for APPROVAL. The other, and probably larger problem, is the marketing hyperbole, or bullshit, as I tend to call it.
No, they aren't conscious, they are probabalistic models, often poorly trained, with poor tool-using implementations, but they can totally do smoke and mirrors, to gain the acceptance that their owners want.

Look up your machine, find where it is, figure if you can replace it - because a tiny thing like this is the difference between an old machine, living again, and a doorstop.

This came about from the new solar farm being built just down the road. I was wondering how they were going to connect back to the substation, which they are doing with an overhead 11kV line. When I saw holes being dug, I thought they were going underground. But there is one section that passes under the main substation feeder, and I thought there is no way in HELL that there was enough clearance, so looked up to check the voltage. (132kV, not 133kV, I had miss-remembered.) Then, on Monday, they had some really THICK cable, and I realised that they were doing that section underground, which explained the different poles either side of the feeder. And also explained why all the other infrastructure is aerial. That stuff must be bloody expensive!
Anyway, now I've gone down that rabbit hole, and I have gaps in my knowledge to fill.
