@isaacgreene That does look satisfying. I’ve made a few jigs before, but nothing like that. I aspire to use more hand tools, but I’m usually trying to finish a project on the house in a crammed-in-time-is-short kind of way and the power tools are the only way to do it.

@isaacgreene And, speaking of boats, if you haven’t read the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome, my kids really enjoyed it as a read-aloud a few years ago. I think they were 11 and 8 at the time.

@isaacgreene I agree. Although for me, since I’m not a sailor, it really should have more to do with my workshop, which is a constant mess and disaster when I have a project going. Maintenance probably means having a place for everything and putting stuff away when I’m done using it. I have a long way to go to get to that place.

@bethanyh It’s a weird coincidence, but I just picked up The Mill on the Floss yesterday at a used book store. Did you enjoy it?
\nHugo is very long. Les Misérables, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Toilers of the Sea make a kind of set. It’s been years since I read them. They are a little like Moby Dick in some of their long descriptive sections.

@isaacgreene Really enjoyed the post on maintenance. It’s something I’ve thought about over the past several years, and I’ve become aware that maintenance for me really requires me to be present and paying attention. I can’t coast along in automatic mode, because then I ignore the things (and relationships and skills and everything) that would benefit most from regular attention. It takes a lot of energy and focus, and it’s so easy to slack. But, in the grand scheme the maintenance probably takes less energy than the repair. Thanks for the encouragement!
