@manton That was the first book by Ishiguro that I “read”. It was the Audible version and the reader acted it so well. I went on to read “The Remains of the Day” next, and there are some similarities, though I’m really glad I read “Klara and the Sun” first.

@tomc @miraz I love the sound of those Rolls-Royce engines too. We live close to what was RAF Hornchurch and so get relatively frequent visits by planes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - the sound is always glorious!

@cn I think that one has 4 GBytes - I can’t check because my son has “borrowed” it for use as a proxy. I was also lucky enough to find an 8 GByte model which I use as a Linux desktop for playing with databases.

Everything eventually migrates to Obsidian for archiving.
\nI also use the “Quick Dynalist” Android app for rapid timestamped capture to Dynalist which is great for adding snippets of information before they evaporate from my brain (half life of about two seconds).

The PDP-8 was a cut-down version of the PDP-5 from the early 60’s and that didn’t have a stack register. But DEC introduced stacks in the PDP-6 (I think). So it might have just been pragmatic to cut-down and re-use the PDP-5 architecture without the design cost of squeezing in the extra register and instructions.

Irvine is a good introduction to a modern take on Stoicism. For me, the key is to think of it as an evolving mental toolkit to build a philosophy of life - it is not a religion where you have to buy in 100% to everything.

Instead when you called a subroutine it had to store the return address in the first word of its own code. This made writing recursive code really interesting…

Our PDP-8 was in three or four cabinets and had (I think) 12 kwords of memory, and a teletype for the console. I really got a kick out of seeing my programmes flashing away on the front-panel lights. Nowadays I build groups of services that run in dozens of Docker containers on a remote web farm, and it is still exciting… but not quite so fulfilling as flipping the switches on the front-panel yourself.

The switches were nearly worn out and sometimes had to be flipped a few times to get a bit set to ‘1’. It was a great incentive to really check your code carefully before running it.

Two main vaults - I use Obsidian Sync to keep the smaller vault synchronised across phone, tablet, and a couple of laptops as my “Working” notes (Journal, Zettlekasten-ish notes, and project status stuff). And then there is a bigger, more secure, vault for the archives. I’ve been living in Markdown since the late 90’s (since before it was formally defined) and so have accumulated more than 3,800 files across the two vaults.
