@fiona funny this was the first conversation I found here today, as I’m also on this same fence after more than ten years using Pocket (even received an email from them once saying I was among the 1000 people who used it the most, don’t know if it’s true though). One thing that I came to hate about Pocket was them ditching TTS for that Amazon voice thing. Everybody says it’s great, but between the two Id pick the robot voice every time and Instapaper still uses it. But what really annoys me in both is that you can’t limit the cache size.

Sorry. First of all, I agree with you entirely about Linux in place of Windows (I’ve to admit I’m having a bit of a hard time putting my finger exactly on what displeases me about W apart from the ridiculous update policy and the various small glitches that plague it, but there’s surely more that contributes to the overall feeling of not wanting to keep using that) and I’d say there’s more good things about Linux. I’ve used it on and off for the last 15 years or so and exclusively for the last six, so of course I find a lot to like about it, as I wasn’t required to use it. That said, I’ll give an example of what I meant: if you speak to any actual security professional, they’ll tell you that the hard truth is that Linux is not at all more secure than Windows or macOS, contrary to what the FOSS community loves spreading. In my view, they do this for two reasons: ideology and sort of a formalist logic that postulates ‘Open Source >> someone competent enough actually looked at the code and found out it’s ok >> it’s more secure than closed source software’. Obviously the problem is with assumptions contained in the middle part of the chain - and I simplified it a lot by skipping the whole process of approving contributions to the code (as someone said, good luck finding out if bugs that lead to vulnerabilities were accidents or inserted on purpose) -, but people ignore and keep irresponsibility lying about it throughout the Internet.

Actually I’m going through something like a bad phase with free and open source software. I still believe it’s a good thing, but came to realize that most of the principles that guide the free software movement aren’t attainable through the means it employs. And then people - I’ll be blunt, I admit - lie to themselves and to everyone around in order to keep pushing the same ideas that could be good but in fact overlook important things (like security, yes). At the same time it pushes a lot of people away with limitations that don’t make any sense to anyone who isn’t already convinced of said ideology.
