I take many of the same actions you do. Many of my favorite genres are small ones—in books, too, for that matter—and I always try to buy music, some merch, and go to shows. I don’t want to argue about Taylor Swift’s music either, I just don’t see significant change coming in the larger system—which does a lot to repress artistry and make the lives of small acts harder—from individual action alone (I’m not sure it can happen at all).
\nIt’s Taylor Swift the phenomenon that gives her the potential power though, so I’m glad we’re in agreement that whatever our feelings about her music/brand, it could be a force for good. Or more of a force for good because she has boosted some smaller acts through her attention, but on balance she could really do some damage to the toxic label system, and some inclination that way seems evident in her re-recording project, which I don’t think is merely a money grab.
\nAll that said, as individuals we can only do what we can do by paying attention to trying to be right in the world and hope others will be too. The rest is just speculation, which has its place and (limited) appeal. I feel this same kind of dynamic intensely with poetry as well, though there the cooperative effort of small presses have managed to maintain a rather robust alternative to the Rupi Kaur big publishing scene, though you won’t see evidence of that in almost any bookstore.
