@bradenslen Yes, the pre-Trump status quo has been rightly blamed for creating the conditions that allowed Trump to be voted in. Everyone needs representation. Two parties are not enough. Fixing that is a harder structural problem we also need to solve.

@isaacgreene @kimberlykg I have never made a bed frame myself but I have inherited maintenance on three that my father in law made. He got better with each one. Getting the shape right is not so tricky. Getting it to stay that shape and not creak is the hard part. Even harder if you have kids who like jumping on the bed. Choose a simple design, then use both glue and screws to hold it together.

@manton Interesting point. To the computer, extruded text is the same game as extruded images. It’s all numbers from the inside. But for some reason we humans like to conjure up intelligence when reading text.

@Miraz It might be a long shot but you could convince developers and neighbors that preserving that view is worthwhile. Maybe turn some lots into a park or limit building heights in certain places. It would be easier to do before anything is built. Thoughtful planning is frustratingly rare.

@cheesemaker As a dot com refugee, this smells exactly on target. We are in the stage of new technology development where we don’t really know how it will be used. It’s really odd to remember that Amazon once only sold books, and now it owns almost all e-commerce. Nobody would have guessed.

@manton Apple could achieve the same benefits by creating this lockdown capability and giving the people who buy their computers the power to choose what data can be accessed by what software. Empowering people in this way used to be a core part of the company’s mission. It is notable that I now wonder if they will choose to keep that power for themselves out of a desire to profit even more in some way.

@manton Maybe a surprising take from me but, as long as humans are in charge and AI remains in a helping mode, I think this is an excellent use for the technology. (As usual, the term “AI” is being stretched to encompass so much that it’s meaningless. Not likely any LLMs involved in this use case.)

@peternlewis This is exactly one of the scenarios that people in charge of “AI safety” are supposed to handle. It is perhaps one of the more likely doomsday possibilities.

If the vision is an “AGI in every pocket” then what sort of monitoring or filtering do we need to prevent assisting such an idiotic request? That’s not something a government regulator could be expected to build. I propose holding each AI company liable for the actions of its technology. That should help incentivize them to build the safeguards themselves.

@danielpunkass Part of why I’m so down on the current crop of AI approaches is that I totally agree with this sentiment. In the long run, machine leaning algorithms are going to be a tremendous service to all of humanity. The current crop of business leadership does not have what it takes to shepherd the technology toward that future. They are burning up the public’s good will in a foolhardy race to dominate an undefined market.

@manton Yeah, I think you’ve heard my cynical view of what comes out of the mouths of company representatives. The simplest explanation is that they have an enormous financial incentive to talk up the capabilities of this technology. Especially now, before IPO.

I’ll be watching closely to see how the rhetoric shifts after IPO. The incentives are subtly different when you have to make quarterly numbers work. Promising the moon and then not delivering it has financial consequences.

No amount of compute power or AI insight could have saved this idea to target lipoprotein A and make a drug that works. We just don’t have enough basic biological knowledge of how the body works.

@isaacgreene Yep. The analogy I’m cooking up is of a robot lawnmower. If I send mine into my yard and it mows down my neighbor’s garden I would expect to be held liable for the expense of the plants it destroyed and the labor of replanting them. Why isn’t that happening with supposedly “rogue” AI?

If the AI features are pushed in my face and I can’t turn them off to get them out of the way I will not “upgrade” to that experience. I am looking closely at iOS 27 and if they haven’t preserved the ability (present in iOS 26) to turn off the AI features then I’m out.
