@manton After updating, I can no longer scroll down far enough to reach the “Show More” button in the Timeline. I am using iOS 18.7.8.

This problem seems to exist for every view, actually, not just the timeline. The buttons at the bottom of the screen cover the bottom end of the scrollable view.

@manton Such a bad idea. If people want to regulate them, the government will have a conflict of interest.

I suppose it is also a sort of funding strategy. If taxpayer dollars are involved it will be argued that the companies “cannot be allowed to fail” when the AI bubble bursts and it comes time to bail them out.

@danielpunkass A librarian hears your request and guides you to books that you can read yourself. An LLM pattern-matches the words you write with its statistical model of all of the words in all of the books in the library and extrudes a statistically probable sequence of words in response that may match reality or may be a complete fabrication. If you ask it to cite references the response is just as likely to include fake articles as real ones.

The librarian consumes the energy contained in the meals they ate in order to respond to your request. The LLM consumes so much energy to respond to each request that people are seriously talking about building new power plants to keep the system running.

\n

A librarian usually cares if you found what you are looking for. An LLM will keep you “engaged” as long as it can so its corporate owners have data to convince investors to give them more money to build new data centers.

@patrickrhone I admire the principled approach! Of course I sometimes have to do the efficient thing and move ahead when I am pressed for time but I always at least save a copy of what I “signed” in case of trouble down the road. I hate the feeling of not having a choice and often find myself opting out of things owned by Facebook or Amazon when I can.

@manton Apple’s authoritarian control over app distribution on their devices is a huge liability for power users and developers. Investors who see this control as an ability to mint money are not seeing the whole picture: all of the amazing apps that never got built or released due to Apple’s paranoia. @manton When I am writing something, a big part of figuring out what I want to say comes from the act of writing. LLMs do not help me with any of that, so I don’t use them.

If I want to uncover patterns in large amounts of data, I use machine learning tools that help reveal the patterns for me. Again, LLMs mostly don’t help with that.

@manton The biggest problem I see with OpenAI and the current crop of AI businesses is that even they don’t seem to know what this technology is for. If they had a use case that reliably helped people, the tech would sell itself. Instead, we are seeing it being pushed on us for every conceivable purpose, most of which don’t work. It feels as if a half-baked cake is being sold too soon.
