@manton Maybe a surprising take from me but, as long as humans are in charge and AI remains in a helping mode, I think this is an excellent use for the technology. (As usual, the term “AI” is being stretched to encompass so much that it’s meaningless. Not likely any LLMs involved in this use case.)

@peternlewis This is exactly one of the scenarios that people in charge of “AI safety” are supposed to handle. It is perhaps one of the more likely doomsday possibilities.

If the vision is an “AGI in every pocket” then what sort of monitoring or filtering do we need to prevent assisting such an idiotic request? That’s not something a government regulator could be expected to build. I propose holding each AI company liable for the actions of its technology. That should help incentivize them to build the safeguards themselves.

@danielpunkass Part of why I’m so down on the current crop of AI approaches is that I totally agree with this sentiment. In the long run, machine leaning algorithms are going to be a tremendous service to all of humanity. The current crop of business leadership does not have what it takes to shepherd the technology toward that future. They are burning up the public’s good will in a foolhardy race to dominate an undefined market.

@manton Yeah, I think you’ve heard my cynical view of what comes out of the mouths of company representatives. The simplest explanation is that they have an enormous financial incentive to talk up the capabilities of this technology. Especially now, before IPO.

I’ll be watching closely to see how the rhetoric shifts after IPO. The incentives are subtly different when you have to make quarterly numbers work. Promising the moon and then not delivering it has financial consequences.

@isaacgreene Yep. The analogy I’m cooking up is of a robot lawnmower. If I send mine into my yard and it mows down my neighbor’s garden I would expect to be held liable for the expense of the plants it destroyed and the labor of replanting them. Why isn’t that happening with supposedly “rogue” AI?

If the AI features are pushed in my face and I can’t turn them off to get them out of the way I will not “upgrade” to that experience. I am looking closely at iOS 27 and if they haven’t preserved the ability (present in iOS 26) to turn off the AI features then I’m out.

@manton The pre-canned presentations are probably a way to mitigate risk that anything going wrong could hurt the stock price. When Apple crossed the trillion dollar market cap threshold the stakes became too high for a live event. As long as Apple continues to prioritize Wall Street’s opinions over its customer’s opinions nothing is going to change for the company.

@manton @ffmike Every time I see a prediction like this I wonder if we are looking at the same “AI” that requires enormous data centers and lots of fresh water to keep it going. Certainly containment of any threat would be as simple as turning off the water and power, wouldn’t it? Or even physically unplugging its network access, which should have been the case from the start to prevent the Hugging Face break-in. The fear mongering just serves to prop up the perceived power of these systems, raising the take at the IPO table.

@manton The complains I have seen from open source maintainers are about the low quality pull requests people are generating with AI tools. What you suggest here sounds a lot like the well-meaning “help” that people are already offering that’s causing the problem. Maybe I’m missing something?

@manton Prediction: Jockeying for position within the marketplace for AI services is going to get even more rough as investors demand something in return for their money. People like Altman and Musk who have consistently overhyped the capabilities of these tools will have especially sharp elbows in an attempt to control the market via monopoly rather than competition.

@fgtech To be clear: as someone who used to write lots of code for a living, I completely understand how LLMs are the best thing since sliced bread for that kind of thing. Most people do not interface with computers for 100% of their work and would never want to do so. AI does nothing to help them.

@danielpunkass My career has shifted toward teaching grades 6-12. The most important part of my job is connecting with students to help them learn. AI does nothing to help with that and in some cases actively interferes.
