@aa My fingers are crossed for you. A couple of years ago our freezer stopped making ice… then stopped keeping ice cream from melting. I made valiant repair attempts but concluded the compressor failed. LG has a defective design and could not fix ours. We gave up and bought a Bosch.

@peternlewis Safari is much much better written software than most of Apple’s other work. Preview is a particularly bad apple (pun intended); it crashes on me multiple times per day.

@danielpunkass Most big banks have a clause in their TOS prohibiting the use of automation to access their systems like this. (I am not a lawyer but I do read those.) There may be allowed APIs for use by tools like QuickBooks but just thought you should be alert to the potential wrath of the bankers.

Also reminds me of Apple’s overzealous pursuit of thinness at all costs, even to the point of keyboard failure. I still lament the loss of wired ethernet on my supposedly “Pro” MacBook.

@bradenslen Me too, but I would argue that Jobs wasn’t more focused on customers, exactly. It’s just that what he wanted was in alignment with what lots of other people wanted. And he had impeccable taste, so the results were also often works of art.

@bradenslen I think you’re on the money. Emphasis on money since this was one of the earliest signs i can remember that Apple was shifting focus away from what was right for customers towards what was right for Wall Street investors (and executives compensated by rising stock prices).

The future (and successful past) of machine learning (“AI” is just a marketing term) is in smaller, well curated models. LLMs are showy but an unsustainable dead-end as a business. Their fundamental large-ness is their undoing.
