@patrickrhone I think we are 100% on the same page except that I would say that even using the term “genie” gives these computer models too much credit. If you build a remote control belt sander that stops listening to your commands and starts destroying your neighbor’s house, I’m going to say that’s on you, not the belt sander.

@patrickrhone Computers do what we tell them to do. While it is convenient for these organizations to try and impute decision-making and ideas to the software they made, the fact is they didn’t take proper precautions and let this dangerous task run amok. What happened? They told a model to act like a hacker. Proper precautions would have included actually blocking its access to external systems it wasn’t supposed to access as part of the experiment.

@manton The worst part of this is that A/B testing is standard practice in many places. While there usually doesn’t seem to be anything wrong, the fact is that companies are running experiments on people without their consent. Research institutions would consider this an egregious ethical breach.

@Miraz Wild! This must have something to do with the way wind speeds are measured in 2-d but actual air flow takes place in three dimensions. Maybe there’s an odd thermal gradient causing air to drop from above or rise from below the plane of measurement.

@bkryer I would love to hear of examples in which LLMs can be used to help separate fact from fiction. As I said, that would be a step in the right direction. So far, I have seen none and the construction of these models make it virtually impossible.

@danielpunkass When LLMs can reliably cite accurate references for the human knowledge they contain I will agree with this idea. The potential is huge, but they just can’t do that. Distinguishing facts from fiction would be a step in the right direction but we aren’t even there yet.
