I grew up in NYC when both were on Broadway, and I went to Godspell (with a friend from synagogue) despite my father's wishes. As I recall the entire musical was done with a single set -- basically a chain link fence around a playground. The production has stuck with me, though obviously in a different way than the movie did for you.
The prevailing attitude was that both shows made the Jews the bad guys, so I never did get to see JCS on stage.
