@therivertao They do whatever they need to do to have what they need, just like they would if they were graduatingwith an MFA or BFA. If it were me, I might look into renting a house with other company members (preferably with a room or basement large enough to use for rehearsals) and sharing meals as a way of cutting costs. I think that part of the program would involve education in financial planning, business models, and basics like cooking, transportation options, heating options, etc. So that they have a plan for sustainability prior to graduating.

@therivertao Second thought: the education program invests money that matches the investment of the company members, thereby owning a portion of profits in perpetuity, the proceeds of which go into a fund for future companies. Included in that might be a rent-free dedicated space for the first year.

@therivertao I guess it depends on where you’re working, and whether there are non-theater spaces that can be used. One of the principles of a sustainable theater is to scale your artistic choices to your resources. In addition, the idea is that members are not paid a salary, but rather take a cut of the box office proceeds after a prorated proportion of production costs are subtracted. If the numbers don’t work, you either subtract until they do, or choose another project. One thing that the A-Corps make available is outside investors as another source of capital, always with artists owning 51% of the company or project.

@therivertao If I were 20 years younger, I’d create a program where there are only 10 actors each year, and they received both acting classes and a secondary focus. At the end of their time, they would each receive $5k to invest in forming a company together – if you don’t form a company, you forfeit that money.

@therivertao I doubt I would do that with experienced actors, although with a cast that size in a musical I don’t have time to let actors find their movement “organically.” To me, that’s sort of like telling the marching band that we want to spell the team name on the field at halftime, and then leave them to figure out how to do arrange themselves according to what feels right.

@JohnBrady I wouldn’t say that Berry was saying rural people look out for each other and city folk don’t, but rather that rural people don’t have a choice in the matter, and so they avoid letting politics separate people into camps. I lived in a town of 460 people, and most did not share my political orientation. But when I needed a plumber or electrician or my car fixed, I had no choice but to work with them. And that leads to keeping the main thing the main thing.
