I don’t think she’d disagree with you here—she’s aware of the Lord’s prayer, of course, & the fact that she calls forgiveness a personal virtue must mean forgiveness is in some sense for the forgiver’s benefit, insofar as virtue cultivates happiness. Still, I find instructive the reminder that forgiveness is not primarily about making ourselves feel good in a self-help kind of way. That’s how I read her main concern in that portion of the interview, anyway.
\n
I’m praying for your brother’s repose, & for peace for you & yours today.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/drewbelf/47474701","date_published":"2024-10-14T16:59:37+00:00","author":{"name":"Andrew Belfield","url":"https://andrewbelfield.com/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Favatars.micro.blog%2Favatars%2F2025%2F50%2F98142.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"drewbelf"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2024-10-14 16:59","date_timestamp":1728925177,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"47439139","content_html":"
@KyleEssary I don’t think I’ve read Volf since grad school—I’ll have to check that out. Your citation, of course, complicates matters further. One way of thinking through these complications, at least by my lights, is to recognize that the ways Jesus radically revises familial relations (Mt 10, 12) means that fidelity to familial duty (1 Tim 5) involves responsibilities to not only one’s biological kin but also & especially those who are “least” (Mt 25). St. Francis of Assisi & James Alison, inter alia, inform my thinking on this.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/drewbelf/46570939","date_published":"2024-09-30T22:39:23+00:00","author":{"name":"Andrew Belfield","url":"https://andrewbelfield.com/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Favatars.micro.blog%2Favatars%2F2025%2F50%2F98142.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"drewbelf"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2024-09-30 22:39","date_timestamp":1727735963,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"46570012","content_html":"
@JohnBrady it would be more honest that way, that’s for sure
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/drewbelf/46570012","date_published":"2024-09-30T22:20:22+00:00","author":{"name":"Andrew Belfield","url":"https://andrewbelfield.com/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Favatars.micro.blog%2Favatars%2F2025%2F50%2F98142.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"drewbelf"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2024-09-30 22:20","date_timestamp":1727734822,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"46569970","content_html":"
@MultoGhost yeah, his brand of Christianity is one that I don’t really recognize (& he & I both are Catholic)
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/drewbelf/46569970","date_published":"2024-09-30T22:19:47+00:00","author":{"name":"Andrew Belfield","url":"https://andrewbelfield.com/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Favatars.micro.blog%2Favatars%2F2025%2F50%2F98142.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"drewbelf"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2024-09-30 22:19","date_timestamp":1727734787,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"46443233","content_html":"
@JohnBrady good to know.
