But overall, I enjoyed the “real universe” bookends of these two episodes more than I did the Mirror Universe filler. The MU is a treat best used sparingly, and between a four- or five-episode arc in S1 and evil!Georgiou as a regular since then, I’m well and truly happy to stay away from the MU for another few seasons (or series, for that matter).
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/djwudi/10735652","date_published":"2020-12-18T05:52:49+00:00","author":{"name":"Michael Hanscom","url":"http://michaelhans.com/eclecticism/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fdjwudi%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"djwudi"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2020-12-18 05:52","date_timestamp":1608270769,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"10706870","content_html":"
@gregmoore @baker FSoL is another consistently high-ranking group. Cool World, though…an excellent soundtrack to a horrible film. If you have fond memories of the film but haven’t seen it in ages, I don’t recommend revisiting it.
\n
I think my first real introduction to electronic dance music would be the first time I heard L.A. Style’s “James Brown Is Dead” in a club.
\n
Definitely into The Orb! U.F.Orb and Orblivion have probably gotten the most play over the years, but other albums surface regularly as well. Of course, it’s hard to mention The Orb without backtracking to Jimmy Cauty’s shenanigans with The KLF, another particular favorite of mine — I’ve tracked down everything I can from them and their various incarnations (The Jams, 2K, The Timelords).
\n
And as far as general electronic recommendations go, two more favorites to toss out, one likely more well-known than the other:
\n
More well-known: Faithless. Defintely more in the house/club family than trance. Fell in love with them the first time I heard “Insomnia”, and…well, I thought I had a full collection, but in grabbing links for this, I just realized they have a new album, which means I need to go spend some money!
\n
Less well-known (at least here in the U.S.): Alabama 3. A blend of acid, house, blues, and country, with some albums that are straight-up acoustic blues, others that are all-out electronic, but most of it existing somewhere in between. My introduction to them was the one-two punch of “Ain’t Goin’ to Goa” and “You Don’t Dans 2 Tekno Anymore”, and they’re another group where I’ve collected everything I’ve been able to find.
\n
CC: @Omrrc @JeremyWxBaker @hollyhoneychurch
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/djwudi/10706870","date_published":"2020-12-12T00:05:25+00:00","author":{"name":"Michael Hanscom","url":"http://michaelhans.com/eclecticism/","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fdjwudi%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"djwudi"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2020-12-12 00:05","date_timestamp":1607731525,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"10706453","content_html":"
@baker That said, there were two trance compilations that got a lot of play in my apartment in the late ’90s (not always in entirely sober frames of mind back then) that I still enjoy many of the selections when they come up: Return to the Source: Deep Trance & Ritual Beats and its follow-up, Return to the Source: The Chakra Journey. Pretty sure it was “Cowgirl” on the Hackers soundtrack that first introduced me to them. “Rez” is so, so, good (as is that Bassnectar remix you mentioned), and the “Rez/Cowgirl” finale to their Everything, Everything live album is perfection. I dearly hope I get to see them live some day.
\n
In line with the conversation on what is or isn’t “trance”, I’ll admit that over the years, I’ve kind of given up on keeping track of genres except in the broadest sense, and particularly when it comes to electronic dance music. There just got to be too many sub- and sub-sub- and sub-sub-sub-genres to keep straight; my iTunes library just has most of it simply under “electronic”.
\n
Trance? Techno? House? D&B?
