Perlā€™s decline was cultural

Thereā€™s been a flurry of discussion on Hacker News and other tech forums about what killed Perl. I wrote a lot of Perl in the mid 90s and subsequently worked on some of the most trafficked sites on the web in mod_perl in the early 2000s, so I have some thoughts. My take: it was mostly baked into the culture. Perl grew amongst a reactionary community with conservative values, which prevented it from evolving into a mature general purpose language ecosystem. Everything else filled the gap.

My best guess, assuming they make it to the moon, is they will have an arc like other tech titans: IBM, Microsoft, DEC where they dominate for some period followed by their dominance waning as things commoditize and open back up.

@manton Itā€™s just incredible the amount of money going into OpenAI and how much capex they are committing to. Makes me wonder, will they ever actually realize a return on all that investment?

I think the only way they could is if they become a platform that underpins a significant portion of the economy. And even if their tech ever gets to the point where thatā€™s possible, I personally think itā€™s way too risky to have one company in that position.

Historically I feel like tech avoids that kind of proprietary platform toward open source or commodities with many suppliers.

Itā€™s like imagining a world where thereā€™s only one CPU vendor and you have to pay per instruction executed.

@manton I also doubt itā€™s the end of the web but it may be the end of the ad supported/google monopoly of the web. Iā€™ll feel bad about ad supported sites that I like to read that might go under, but I wonā€™t feel bad about the google monopoly falling apart and taking SEO junk sites with them.

I do think thereā€™s a chance some sort of micropayment system becomes popular and replaces ad income and maybe even AI agents will need to participate in this system.

@manton Itā€™s an interesting time right now for Apple and their position as a dominant platform, especially on mobile. On the one hand, I trust Apple more than other companies with privacy and my data. On the other, I think Apple has gone too far with lock in and prioritizing their own profits and dominance over whatā€™s best for consumers and the ecosystem.

Itā€™s feeling to me that the best outcome here might be that LLMs become a commodity and operating systems/platforms allow you to swap out your models with ease. Then you arenā€™t locked in to an OS or a model provider. But I think all the companies involved, including Apple, are trying hard to avoid this open ecosystem.
