1. No, private industries are most certainly not the surveillance state—they are enablers of it. When the state demands information from private companies, the companies hand it over. That very thing is happening with ICE right this moment to hunt down undocumented people.

@_elena @max @ben I think a big part of it needs to be a cultural norm shift where people get used to donating to individual creators instead of paying monthly subscriptions for streaming platforms' overabundance of content. (Quality over quantity)

The cost difference wouldn't be that bad; I think it's the mentality shift that's more difficult. Patreon has certainly made this easier, but their UI is lame and it'd be rad if there were a non-profit alternative.

@codinghorror @justenoughducks @rpluim From my surface-level understanding, one big part of it is the ineffectual capital gains tax. The tax is only applied when people sell assets; so instead, they dodge taxes by simply borrowing against their assets' worth. Those asset values keep ballooning while they avoid paying tax on it as long as possible.

I'm inclined to agree there should be an asset tax. People should be disincentivized from hoarding egregious amounts of wealth.
