@jthingelstad we used a 3D printing technique in which we stuck bare root trees into the ground and then watered them. :) I also taught the students what I learned from Wangari Maathai about capturing rain with simple landscape modifications.

@rscottjones nice! I heard the bear, maybe a meter from me, breathing through its nose as it sniffed my tent. Probably was trying to figure out why there was a new thing on its riverbank. I was there studying salmonid fishes, and I think the bear was, too.

A photo from my research in the Brooks Range 11 years ago. I took this after my pilot said “if the weather is good, I’ll be back in three days.” And then he took off. And one more photo of the bear tracks outside my tent the next morning.

@mwerickson it has often seemed to me that in the that text Paul is affirming the Epicurean doctrine that the divine is far greater than anything to be found in a temple, while also showing that Epicurus’ conclusion that God would have no interest in human affairs is quite different from how God’s love surprisingly expresses itself in taking the form of a servant.

@mwerickson Paul uses κενοδοξία in Philippians in the same way Epicurus does in his κυριαι δοξαι — both as a single word and as separate words. My hunch is that Paul is borrowing Epicurus’ word and his use of that word to explain the Incarnation to a community that knows Epicurus (as Paul does at least by the time he is in Athens in Acts 17, but likely before then.)

@ReaderJohn Interesting. I like the Vulgate for memorization for the same reason. When I was on IVCF staff, seemed like everyone was using the NIV, with a handful using the NASB. Most religion professors I know now use the NRSV.
