That frees us up from trying to make things picture perfect. In my own journals I’ve added little bits of calligraphy, or sometimes I just make the letters and numbers a little fancier, or thicker, or colorful. Words, images, numbers, and brief reflections about what I see, what I wonder about, what connections I am making — all these become tools of observation and of thinking and of memory. The tan paper feels less pristine than expensive white paper, and so I feel comfortable making quick “gestures” rather than trying to make perfect sketches.
