The core position is long-range, low-turnover holding. Ralph Lauren’s preppy style or Hermès equestrian aesthetics belong here, as well as Burberry’s trench or check pattern. These are positions held for 60 years and 200 years, respectively.

Building a brand is having the patience and fortitude to do the same thing over and over and over. It’s about being boring in one way to be creative in others.

@JohnPhilpin I don’t disagree. I think Robin’s distinction is based on how all the platforms suddenly shifted from saying “influencer” to “creator.” And “the creator economy” usually seems to apply to people building some form of revenue stream on said platforms.

The standard big tech rename to make something seem new and exciting.

\n

The language shift also feels significant related to how it positions power in the relationship.

\n

An influencer has the power because the value is created via their influence, which is platform agnostic.

\n

“Creator” feels like it gives more credit to the tools of creation, shifting power back to the platforms.

\n

At the end of the day, to your point, the real distinction is between people that create income on the internet via tools they control vs building on someone else’s tools and being at the mercy of an external algorithm or distribution mechanism.
