@aaronpk I find the opposite! I’ve just upgraded to an iPhone 11 and it’s the first phone I’ve had with Face ID. I find it very fast, and it is almost immediate when I‘m already using my phone and use Face ID to log into an app/account that uses it, such as my bank’s app.

@ayjay I agree with all Barney’s points. Scholes loved kicking people just as much as the ball! From Michael Cox’s excellent ‘The Mixer’:

@bradenslen yeah. I tend to agree. The story isn’t new—a free service raises money through secondary means, then eventually increases the prominence and emphasis of these secondary means compared with the original service. I think a key point in the article is the lack of competition. Bing and DuckDuckGo represent little more than a rounding error in terms of search users. I think that’s why there aren’t many solutions offered.

@ablaze I use Reading List and I like it a lot. It feels more reliable to me than Instapaper because it’s an OS level service. Also: Instapaper’s changed hands regularly, which worries me, even before we consider that it is currently shut off to EU users for dubious GDPR reasons

@adders just read this in my RSS feed (full of your ‘new’ posts btw) and immediately came over here to say congrats on the move to Ghost and that I hope it continues to work out well. I feel broadly the same about WordPress—it’s the best of a bad bunch of CMSs I’ve used, but could be so much better and friction-free. (I can’t even get the iOS app to work, for example. Although that’s likely a hosting thing.)

@Verso I’ll add to the chorus of Feedbin as a service + Reeder as a front-end, although I’m trying to rely on Reeder less. Feedbin is pleasurable to use on Mac (or PC), easy to use on iPad, a bit frustrating on iPhone. Happy to pay for useful software.

@tones I’m on extended parental leave at the moment but I used to enjoy the cycle commute to work on my hybrid. I live near a lot of woodland with dedicated cycle paths but probably need a proper mountain bike to tackle that!
