I was at a conference today and I was chatting with some mature industry colleagues. I lamented how young people don't understand constraints like we did.
Now when you make an inefficient decision you just get a bigger bill, and as a developer you might not even see the bill. But in the past an inefficient software design and your app wouldn't run.
I strongly feel that the lack of appreciation for how hosting actually works is why people hand over buckets of money to Tier 1 hosts. People think servers, networks and even managing runtimes are 'icky'.

A lot of times they aim to have a relatively low TTL because they want to be able to adapt to changing network conditions in live streaming.
I'm not entirely surprised that there's a lot of polling going on but that does seem excessive.
The domain can have a higher TTL but then response headers may set a Cache-Control which is short and then perhaps Alexa is using that to trigger a new DNS lookup?

I have done some work on 'app integrity' for my employer recently.
It was doing a similar thing with network scanner apps, refusing to run because they were installed.
I requested we turn off those protections. I wanted the blast radius of any protection false positives to be as small as possible.
Granted, I am just protecting streaming credentials, not banking details.
But the companies providing app protection are trying to throw everything possible in and one-upping their competitors.
Risk is relative and we should work in consultation with customers before making breaking changes.

I'm not sure you've ever covered it, but in 1997 HMY Britannia was heading out East, and was resupplying with RFA Bayleaf at sea.
The story I was told was that Britannia leaned in a little too close and scraped down the side of Bayleaf.
To which cue lots of RFA crew taunting Britannia's crew inspecting the damage.
Also, I was told that a piece of the gold leaf railings was hung up in the crew bar on Bayleaf.
The collision is documented in Hansard for reference.
She was on her way to Hong Kong for the handover to China, and they had to try and hide the damage.

I worked for a big DIY retailer and had a DECT phone in my top (red) apron pocket.
I was trying to quickly move some pallets around the store before customers arrived.
The phone dropped out of my pocket and I stopped to pick it up. The pallet truck I was pulling at high speed with 1000 litres of paint did not stop. I ran myself over trying to catch the phone.

I had an idea some years back.
What if you could create classes of association on social media.
Where you could choose to ignore any accounts that have no verified identity, but selectively you could read/follow.
Then establish other ring-fence rules that don't block someone from speaking, but which encourages people to identify to maximise their use of the platforms.
@bloor as an infrastructure architect (among other things) for a large streaming company, I am really not a fan of the idea of double dipping.
Why should ISPs get a say in what their customers do with their connection? Should ISPs get paid by Amazon if customers buy stuff online as well?
It's absolutely true that ISPs need revenue to pay for infra, but at the same time tech companies are also happy to work on mutual investments to improve infra. But asking for €Xm per year in a bandwidth toll isn't good for customers.
Also, most content companies aren't as profitable as people would like to think. The margins are razor thin and their ambitions don't account for that. It will stifle many companies who won't be able to deliver to those ISPs customers, or it will break them.

If the data isn't too large then there are long-life Blu-ray and DVD disks, many of them claim to be viable for over 100 years, M-Disc claims 1000 years!

The truth of it is that music was so devalued through piracy and the rise of streaming that DRM became meaningless.
But the music business is now a husk, look at the complaints by artists about their royalties.
I note that you have a consumer campaign that has no positive outreach for companies using DRM. If you really cared then you'd be offering solutions, offering answers, not just focusing on the negatives.

AWS in particular is doing its best to be sticky.
They preach that the more you invest in their ecosystem, the more you get out. I've seen people say things like \"If we just spend more with them, then we'll get a better deal.\"
My experience of vendor relationships is that lock-in doesn't give you the best discount, having a viable exit strategy gets you the best deal.
