I had a friend try to convince me the other day that universities are effectively shut down because when they try to lecture on certain topics where the thinking has changed, anyone who doesn't like to hear any outdated content will immediately shout down the professor and take over the class.

I'm sure there's some 90 year old professor somewhere who still thinks that Columbus was a pure-and-simple hero and will brook no argument, and I'm sure that professor (and those of his ilk) occasionally get a shout-down. But the idea that this is some sort of epidemic that's destroying the university system is just ridiculous.

\n\nI'm about to make a very, very bad comparison, but one of my favorite blogs is Daring Fireball, and one of the author's favorite non-tech topics is baseball, in which I have no interest. There have been times where I've thought to myself, \"What is this topic doing here?\", but in the end, I just read the posts that interest me, and skip the ones that don't. But occasionally, just having seen the lede on his baseball posts keeps me informed enough to make casual conversation with baseball-focused friends, family, and colleagues.
\n\nSo I guess my point is that I think the balance tilts towards combining them. People who aren't interested will skip those posts, but may still be touched by them to some degree. People who actively wish to avoid those posts--deniers and antisemites--well, maybe it's OK to lose those readers.
