This seems strikingly similar to debates within biblical interpretation (more in my wheelhouse), in which arguments revolve around reading Scripture for the “literal” sense as opposed to reading for the “deeper” or “spiritual” senses (e.g., allegorical, tropological, anagogical). Stopping at the “literal” (or grammatical/historical) meaning is bad, as moderns are apt to do. But equally bad is quickly blowing by the literal sense on the way to deeper, hidden meanings. Beyond a certain size (which I’m reticent to specify), the nature and functions of the church (e.g., shepherding the flock, living as the family of God, etc.) begin to morph into something unrecognizable.
