Even if you disagree with the substance of it (totally fine!), I think his more recent work admits of a more charitable reading: heās trying to uncover the dynamics in our common life that challenge or undermine the realization of these goods.

The āwe already know all thisā conceit is so strange on so many different levels. Obviously, writing words and debating ideas will only ever have so much real-world impact on behavior; we are always tempted to overestimate the influence of reading/ideas/etc. But that doesnāt mean we need to stop reading/writing just because weāre at a loss to figure out how to change behavior (our own or that of other people). But beyond that, each generation has to ācome to knowā what prior generations took for granted. Being inducted into those enduring questions and conversations happens for different people at various points, and owing to a huge variety of sourcesā¦which could include Kingsnorth, even if you happen to not prefer his take.

This seems strikingly similar to debates within biblical interpretation (more in my wheelhouse), in which arguments revolve around reading Scripture for the āliteralā sense as opposed to reading for the ādeeperā or āspiritualā senses (e.g., allegorical, tropological, anagogical). Stopping at the āliteralā (or grammatical/historical) meaning is bad, as moderns are apt to do. But equally bad is quickly blowing by the literal sense on the way to deeper, hidden meanings. Sustained attention to the literal sense is the doorway into the other layers.

Beyond a certain size (which Iām reticent to specify), the nature and functions of the church (e.g., shepherding the flock, living as the family of God, etc.) begin to morph into something unrecognizable. Some churches notice this and seek to mitigate against it, but theyāre largely unsuccessful in my view.
