@ReaderJohn Thatā€™s wisdom right there. Iā€™m trying to limit myself much more to whatā€™s available at Austin Public Library. @tinyroofnail I thought I could sneak it in without comment šŸ™ƒ. Going in, the main criticisms I had encountered in reviews were that it didnā€™t really make an argument (and therefore failed to make good on the title) and that it made no effort to persuade those on the other side. Those criticisms are true as far as they go, and the biggest shortcoming of the book <b>by far</b> is the fact that Christman is unable to imagine how any Christians might be compelled by conservatism or might be disinclined to move leftward because of convictions around social issues. He finds the contemporary Trumpian (religious) right <I>really</i> off-putting; totally fair (obviously), but then he lumps all right-leaning Christians into the bucket of greedy/racist/xenophobic/etc. But now Iā€™ve given a misleading take because it was actually quite good! Christman is a pleasure to read. The fact that he didnā€™t really make an argument didnā€™t bother me much personally. He basically narrates how an experience with the Sermon on the Mount in college set him on a path toward leftism. Then (in the second chapter I believe), he writes to people who might be recently alienated from the religious right in which they were raised (and he lists a series of events that might have unsettled their easy certainties); itā€™s a very effective bit of writing. I thought the middle sections on capitalism (which he defines as ā€œprivate property run amokā€) and work/labor were really well-done and thought-provoking. Honestly, his theological reflections are really interesting, even tantalizing at points, but never quite fully developed. A more sustained treatment of the Sermon on the Mount throughout wouldā€™ve been an improvement in my mind. He couldā€™ve been more overtly theological and I donā€™t think anyone wouldā€™ve batted an eye (at least I certainly wouldnā€™t have). His book would perhaps more accurately be titled ā€œWhy Leftism Doesnā€™t Conflict with Christianity (and Actually Can Be Shown to Be Quite Compatible With It).ā€ Not quite as punchy, but probably more accurate.

@joshuapsteele Wow! That HR is pretty high. Mine is usually on the higher side relative to the people I run with (being in the 170s/180s not uncommon), so I try not to make too much out of it. @todd FWIW, my take is that Crawford has been engaged in a pretty consistent intellectual project since Shop Class as Soulcraft and World Beyond Your Head, circling around a cluster of related topics (e.g., human agency/embodiment, man as a political/social animal, meaningful work/formation/education, freedom/responsibility/self-government, etc.). Even if you disagree with the substance of it (totally fine!), I think his more recent work admits of a more charitable reading: heā€™s trying to uncover the dynamics in our common life that challenge or undermine the realization of these goods.

@jabel Iā€™m about a third of the way through Kingsnorth and I totally agree with @tinyroofnail on this issue (and would be able to agree with the substance of his argument without having read any of Kingsnorth). The ā€œwe already know all thisā€ conceit is so strange on so many different levels. Obviously, writing words and debating ideas will only ever have so much real-world impact on behavior; we are always tempted to overestimate the influence of reading/ideas/etc. But that doesnā€™t mean we need to stop reading/writing just because weā€™re at a loss to figure out how to change behavior (our own or that of other people). But beyond that, each generation has to ā€œcome to knowā€ what prior generations took for granted. Being inducted into those enduring questions and conversations happens for different people at various points, and owing to a huge variety of sourcesā€¦which could include Kingsnorth, even if you happen to not prefer his take.

This seems strikingly similar to debates within biblical interpretation (more in my wheelhouse), in which arguments revolve around reading Scripture for the ā€œliteralā€ sense as opposed to reading for the ā€œdeeperā€ or ā€œspiritualā€ senses (e.g., allegorical, tropological, anagogical). Stopping at the ā€œliteralā€ (or grammatical/historical) meaning is bad, as moderns are apt to do. But equally bad is quickly blowing by the literal sense on the way to deeper, hidden meanings. Sustained attention to the literal sense is the doorway into the other layers.
