@dwalbert Very intriguing. This seems strikingly similar to debates within biblical interpretation (more in my wheelhouse), in which arguments revolve around reading Scripture for the ā€œliteralā€ sense as opposed to reading for the ā€œdeeperā€ or ā€œspiritualā€ senses (e.g., allegorical, tropological, anagogical). Stopping at the ā€œliteralā€ (or grammatical/historical) meaning is bad, as moderns are apt to do. But equally bad is quickly blowing by the literal sense on the way to deeper, hidden meanings. Sustained attention to the literal sense is the doorway into the other layers.

@ReaderJohn @JohnBrady yes, you both have ably described why Iā€™ve arrived at this conviction. Beyond a certain size (which Iā€™m reticent to specify), the nature and functions of the church (e.g., shepherding the flock, living as the family of God, etc.) begin to morph into something unrecognizable. Some churches notice this and seek to mitigate against it, but theyā€™re largely unsuccessful in my view.

Like most preachers, I grossly overestimated the importance of my part in the sermon. When I thought of preaching, I did not consider it to be a congregationā€™s reception of the word of God, but a speakerā€™s command of the Bibleā€™s hidden meanings and applications, which were served up in a way to showcase the authority and skill of the preacher. In those days the gospel lived or died by my personal performance. My preaching was a small cloud of glory that followed me around and hung like a canopy over the pulpit whenever I occupied it. Just led a group of church members through the first part of The Didache; a very eager and stimulating discussion ensued (including a surprising digression on purgatory!). Guess people are interested to know what early Christians believed and practiced!

@JohnBrady very interesting! To your first point: Iā€™d be curious to hear the rationale behind that. Also: isnā€™t part of the allure of a house church that youā€™re free to organize as you see fit? Strange to impose strict rules on other house churches (but also not surprising). To your second point: Does that variety mean those churches arenā€™t following the prescriptions like they should, or that thereā€™s still a surprising amount of latitude within said prescriptions?

@ablerism not part of one of those traditions, but more liturgical/sacramental than your average Protestant church, I would say (but who knows?). To your other question: Yes, I think so (re: modifications, how-tos in an inherited space)ā€¦and in particular how to make the space more conducive for worship. Iā€™m wanting to give some thought to how layout, arrangement, and aesthetics might aid the liturgical experience, especially since the space was designed for a different purpose. I donā€™t know which sources might provide the best inspiration, lines of further thought, etc. Thanks!

@ablerism curious to get your thoughts (whenever you have time to respond) on church architecture and the use of liturgical space. My initial foray into this topic has uncovered some Catholic sources (here and here), but Iā€™m curious if you have thoughts on where to start, trajectories for further reflection, and so on. Aside from an intellectual curiosity, Iā€™m also partially motivated because Iā€™m helping to lead a church that meets in an elementary school; Iā€™m wanting to be creative in our use of space while also not wanting to re-invent the wheel. Whatever we do, I want to act with some awareness of how others have thought about worship space. He begins with Israel, moves through the Greek philosophers, then on to the New Testament, the Church Fathers, the medieval period, the branches of the Reformation (Lutheran, Reformed/Presbyterian, Anglican, Congregationalist/Baptist/Methodist), and concludes with Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox approaches. He defines the ā€œcure of soulsā€ as ā€œthe sustaining and curative treatment of persons in those matters that reach beyond the requirements of the animal life.ā€ His book shows how the aims and methods in the cure of souls have shifted and adapted over time.
