@jabel I’m about a third of the way through Kingsnorth and I totally agree with @tinyroofnail on this issue (and would be able to agree with the substance of his argument without having read any of Kingsnorth). The “we already know all this” conceit is so strange on so many different levels. Obviously, writing words and debating ideas will only ever have so much real-world impact on behavior; we are always tempted to overestimate the influence of reading/ideas/etc. But that doesn’t mean we need to stop reading/writing just because we’re at a loss to figure out how to change behavior (our own or that of other people). But beyond that, each generation has to “come to know” what prior generations took for granted. Being inducted into those enduring questions and conversations happens for different people at various points, and owing to a huge variety of sources…which could include Kingsnorth, even if you happen to not prefer his take.

Saw it last Sunday with the family (minus Corrie) for Kristyn’s birthday: it was good! I get the complaints over the movie’s ambivalent messaging about screens/tech, but I wasn’t bothered by it. I wouldn’t expect a Kingsnorthian treatment of screens in a Pixar movie 🙃

The Protestant church got rid of Laetare as well as Rogate and many of the other days for reasons I have never fully understood. It created a bland church calendar and liturgies du jour in the image of people who have been abstracted from place and history, who have no feel for the symbols and no memory of the stories. They live, work, and worship in climate-controlled buildings. They have largely adopted a digitalized language. Their daily routines override the natural rhythms and longings of life.

@dwalbert Very intriguing. This seems strikingly similar to debates within biblical interpretation (more in my wheelhouse), in which arguments revolve around reading Scripture for the “literal” sense as opposed to reading for the “deeper” or “spiritual” senses (e.g., allegorical, tropological, anagogical). Stopping at the “literal” (or grammatical/historical) meaning is bad, as moderns are apt to do. But equally bad is quickly blowing by the literal sense on the way to deeper, hidden meanings. Sustained attention to the literal sense is the doorway into the other layers.

@ReaderJohn @JohnBrady yes, you both have ably described why I’ve arrived at this conviction. Beyond a certain size (which I’m reticent to specify), the nature and functions of the church (e.g., shepherding the flock, living as the family of God, etc.) begin to morph into something unrecognizable. Some churches notice this and seek to mitigate against it, but they’re largely unsuccessful in my view.

@JohnBrady very interesting! To your first point: I’d be curious to hear the rationale behind that. Also: isn’t part of the allure of a house church that you’re free to organize as you see fit? Strange to impose strict rules on other house churches (but also not surprising). @ablerism not part of one of those traditions, but more liturgical/sacramental than your average Protestant church, I would say (but who knows?). To your other question: Yes, I think so (re: modifications, how-tos in an inherited space)…and in particular how to make the space more conducive for worship. I’m wanting to give some thought to how layout, arrangement, and aesthetics might aid the liturgical experience, especially since the space was designed for a different purpose. @ablerism curious to get your thoughts (whenever you have time to respond) on church architecture and the use of liturgical space. My initial foray into this topic has uncovered some Catholic sources (here and here), but I’m curious if you have thoughts on where to start, trajectories for further reflection, and so on.
