@manton I think the Muse VPS being private is the right start. Ultimately, it’s Apple’s game to lose being the preferred device vendor. But I expect it’s likely they will, given they’re going to hobble capabilities to protect the AppStore protection racket.

The killer app(s) for agents will eventually happen for normies that makes privacy concerns secondary as it always does, and I don’t see it happening first in Siri or whatever Apple locks down and “offers”. Self-writing software is kind of their antithesis.

@manton That stinks, but damn if the economics of US rail isn’t brutal outside of the NE corridor and other limited spots.

Anytime I think of taking the Brightline, it’s often not cost competitive vs. splitting Ubers with my friends to go direct. Last mile issues are notable in FL heat, and often boil down to ride sharing.

Or it’s not that much better than the $5 Tri-Rail which has free parking. I do hope it makes it through somehow.

@manton Guessing the snag is something around volume. The Neo is basically chip leftovers which they presumably want to limit, and they probably sell every Neo they can already.

So the argument for another low end headless Mac might be a rounding error for the company that can’t be bothered to make an iPhone mini for everyone that really wants a new one.

Particularly when there isn’t really much great competition/$ for the mini as it is. Even the Beelinks and others are not really much cheaper, so less competitive pressure?

@manton Our app was seeing a lot of automated activity on our signup flow, and every time I have to navigate Cloudflare I forget where I need to go or get totally turned around between the multiple places needing configuration.

Had a great time just throwing Codex at their MCP to update blocklists for the Russian group hitting us. Also was able to have it configure a worker to monitor this activity better into our APM.

(Although configuring the MCP API token permissions was still a bit overwhelming, given paranoia around agents mucking in Cloudflare generally)

Apple doesn’t need nVidia (or anyone) for it’s consumer GPUs, but if you want to not be left in the dust on the current state of AI (Apple’s perceptive achilles heel) they’ve got too much IP to ignore.

@manton OHV prices still seem fairly low, and unlike Hetzner have inexpensive US-based options. But the $899 Mac mini definitely gets you a lot more hardware, although cloud resiliency is nice aside from waiting out prices (that, in all honesty, may be permanently gone either from RAM or inflation)

I think if I were going to bite the bullet on any local hardware right now I would try to piggy back off a Steam Machine mostly sitting idle. But I already let my Switch and PS5 sit unplayed, so 2017 iMac it remains :)

I’m always forgetting the curly syntax to include YouTube video (and my autocorrect is always trying to camel case it, which breaks the tag as it needs to be lowercase I believe)

$5099 now the minimum buy in for a 128GB Mac, which I guess is on par with a DGX Spark 🫠.

Not sure if it was actually nerfed or not, but was really hoping the mini would have been able to hit 128GB. Looks like I will continue with my 2017 iMac a while longer, hopefully someone solves 5K Linux soon…
