The Block Island ferry just left with a big crowd, Lady Frances is going by now for fishing excursion, flags are flapping in the breeze. Reading the NC State Extension page about yellowjackets (and other non-honey bee stinging insects in North Carolina). There’s a nest in our backyard. It’s fascinating to watch (from afar) these insects launch straight up like rockets, catching the sunlight before they disappear into the woods.

Tropical Storm Arthur blew into North Carolina yesterday, first with high winds, then with heavy rains (while Erin and I were in Cat’s Cradle listening to The Beths). Naturally, I went looking for turtles. This one was poking beneath the wood pile looking for slugs.
