Stalwart hosted locally, with a VPS WireGuard proxy works great, and completely replaces Google Gmail/calendar/contacts/drive. Even calendar invites/reshedules work perfectly, both on mobile and desktop MUAs/calendar apps.

Make sure you find a VPS that will work with you on opening ports 25 et.al and also watch spammers on their network to keep their IP blocks from being blacklisted.
In the US I’m very happy with Linode. That’s where I’ve run a half-dozen email domains for all this time. Support is great too (real people respond!)

And what do you know? It just works. And it’s so fast!
Don’t listen to the haters that say PWAs aren’t ready for prime time. They have been for years, they’re just neutered from unnecessary gate keeping.
My hot take is that with recent silicon advances and maturation of next gen web tech (Servo, wasm, Rust), now is the right time for a true mobile web OS rebooting. Remove the artificial duopoly restrictions and it will work.
