@flotisserie As an early adopter of the Anxious Generation’s problems, one who’s seen a lot of praise for Haidt and little pushback, this was a cathartic interview to read. Going off of my life and my friends’ lives, Vaidhyanathan is essentially right. Inhumane technology correlates with (and yes, for many of us, noticeably aggravates) preexisting phenomena that negatively impact mental health.

Haidt so often focuses on “risk” as the thing society is missing, which blinds him to questions about real harm. I wish he could reframe what’s missing as the human need not so much for risk, but for agency. School bans feel good because they feel like we’re doing something. I suspect that they probably will help a few kids; however, the safe assumption is that the already troubled teenager will either find ways around the restrictions, or will simply move on to the next maladaptive coping strategy within reach.

@joshuapsteele I couldn’t figure out where to start yesterday with answering your question. “Power” is what I’d talk about if I were trying to describe the “what went wrong” to someone outside of the movement, or maybe “fear”; your list here is pretty clear-eyed and comprehensive, for my money.

If however I was trying to provoke reflection from the particular slice of American evangelicalism I grew up in (a somewhat Young, Restless, & Reformed evangelicalism), I’d start with the forgotten words of Matt 6:33, and his righteousness. From where I’m standing, we (which feels like the right word, even as I’ve started worshipping in the mainline) either can’t or aren’t interested in seeing much of God’s righteousness. Those who talk loudest about God’s sovereignty seem to struggle mightily with contemplating God’s righteousness. We tend to fall back either on our own righteousness, or on the righteousness of those we recognize as our ancestors, whether literally or spiritually. The former temptation is at least recognized as a trap. That the latter is also spiritually perilous–that when we cross the line from “gratitude for” to “faith in” our ancestors’ righteousness, our eyes are just as effectively distracted from the righteousness of God–somehow doesn’t seem to register, theologically or practically.

It should, though. It really, really should. Until we figure out how to lament that and face up to the ways we as the church have sinned against God and man–until we figure out how to hold on to the catholicity of the church in a way that is centered on Jesus Christ, and not on attempting to enact our own justification of ourselves or our denominations–until we are seeking God’s righteousness, I expect American evangelicalism to continue along its current trajectory.

@miljko Thanks for sharing. Another analogy (inspired by Walker’s fire) is that we’re living in an age of alchemists. How do we treat the increasingly prevalent ‘lead poisoning’ of our society, when it comes to communication, relationships, institutions, markets, politics, art, ideas? How much should we settle for treatment of lead poisoning, instead of prevention? (I worry that a ‘slop tax’ won’t necessarily be implemented in a way that’s genuinely healing; my support for it is largely based on the belief that it would likely be helpful in preventing/mitigating an AI-induced bubble/crash in the market.)

@ReaderJohn Interesting conversation! But the thing that bothers me most about my life as it pertains to my e-library hasn’t been mentioned yet, in either essay or in the discussion here: I own a hundred books that I can’t possibly share with anyone, unless I lend someone my e-reader itself. It’s troubling, to “own” something that my friends can’t borrow from me. I think the un-lendability of e-books, the anti-shareability (barring software like Libby, which can only be implemented by institutions, not individuals) is a concern that simply can’t be ameliorated. That’s the main reason I’ve shifted back towards buying physical books, even when they’re a bit more expensive than the Kindle sale price.
