Ireland & U.K. were some of the last countries to get HBO Max. You subscribe and find HBO shows like Westworld aren’t on it. But I can “buy” it from Prime Video. Legal streaming is just three-card monte. The show you want could be there, on a different service or only available for purchase.

Nintendo Switch 2 gets user replaceable batteries in the EU

While I enjoy watching The Vampire Lestat it does miss having a human POV character. The vampires are intense with each other all the time. Having not read the books I don’t know if they are capable of human friendship, but they could do with not having 300 years of baggage with everyone.

I’m still paying for a Microsoft Office home subscription and I wonder why. Habit? I’ve stopped using Outlook and probably open Word on my home machine twice a year. If I opened it now, the Copilot crapware would be waiting for me.

Irish Rail blowing €50M over five years on traffic management software that doesn’t work makes for wild reading. They signed the contract with the vendor in June 2020, and were then told the software they thought they’d be getting would be replaced in 2021. And no one asked to see a build of code?

Years ago I had a meeting at the HQ of one of the main Irish banks. The day before was the goodbye party for the IT team who were shifted to an outsourcing provider. The bank was going to boost profitability by reducing tech spend. Today 80% of Irish adults use Revolut. That party was a domino.

With the re-release of the Bond movies you’d think they’ve have converged on 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos for purchase. Nope. The Connery movies have that. For Craig only No Time To Die has that. Brosnan/Dalton/Moore/Lazenby have 4K scans. But Netflix? They have unreleased source files for all of them.

I bought an Nvidia Shield Pro back in 2019. Seven years later and nothing on the market has superseded it. Android TV on the device is decaying but it still does Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HEVC playback. A lack of Dolby Vision 2 support is what’ll kill it off. But that’s a while away.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind would have been a better movie if it was just François Truffaut and Bob Balaban travelling the world investigating UFOs.
