Good review! Funny, most people I follow had the opposite (but predictable) complaint, \"The book was better! The science was everything and they left out so many good bits! Wahhh\". I laugh because while I thoroughly enjoyed the book (and \"hard\" science fiction, in general) I'm actually shocked that they were able to release a \"mere\" 2 hour 45 minute movie that included as much science as they did.
Also, the movie got the can-do tone, humor and hopefulness just right. One of the best movies in the last decade, IMO. Hey, and the Motion Picture Academy has said puppeted characters are now eligible for best-supporting Oscar. Give James \"Rocky\" Ortiz a statue!
Also, take heart, all you book-was-better nerds, the film editor said they had a 6-hour rough cut they chopped down to 3.5-hours for the initial audience screener. (Which tested well even at that length.) So, there's plenty of material for an extended cut with the extra science you missed.

My personal opinion is that the work stands apart and has a life of its own beyond the author ... unless revelations about the author expose darker meanings and intentions buried in the work. Sometimes ideas or scenes you thought were accidents or ironic or pointed humor turn out to be true insights into the author's inner demons. So, those works can't help but get retroactively poisoned by what you know too late.

Some of the most interesting arguments keep popping up around the question whether you can continue to love a body of work (Harry Potter, the Ender's Game Saga, Dilbert, Neil Gaman, etc) even when confronted with the hostile homophobia, transphobia, regressive political views and sexual abuse of their creator. I've been surprised a few times that people are willing mostly to engage this question with some nuance and empathy. True fans can understand you having to reject the work you love because of its author and also accept someone who clings dearly to the meaning a beloved work held for them while ignoring the flaws of the author.

A cinemaphile/cinematography YouTuber I greatly respect (a true expert on film) argued that High-Frame-Rate movies are a gimmicky abomination that will NEVER create watchable films. I briefly and gently suggested that he could be right but the same was said before about every technological advancement in film (sound, color, 3D, IMAX, digital projection, etc.) He came back at me with paragraphs and paragraphs of criticism questioning my utter lack of knowledge, whether I'd seen any good films at all and generally doubting I had any good sense or taste. Once a few of his fans piled on with insults, nothing I said with good humor, humility and a respectful tone could diminish the collective hate coming my way. I thought we'd at least get to a agree-to-disagree resolution but I was left with no choice but to exit the discussion in shame.

I've been throwing since I was a kid and teaching people to throw. The one rule for teaching boomerangs is watch for hasty/arrogant goobers who will ignore your lesson, grab one and throw it badly. Most of time, it'll become a dangerous missile that threatens to take out half the kids in the park but often flies straight up and then back in a dive that has a chance at taking the thrower out at the knees. The fear in their eyes is glorious karma.

This prediction is so true. To be honest, I do mostly enjoy conversational summaries/answers to searches by AI ... but ... also had the \"stochastic parrots\" confidently get answers wrong often enough that I _ALWAYS_ have to confirm result details with old school results anyway.
I'd say AI search is like yelling a question at your know-it-all buddy in the nest cubicle (Hey, Jud, what's the C in E=MC2?) if the answer matches what you kind of remember, you're good. If he says \"It's C for Celsius, for sure\"), you trust your instincts, roll your eyes and say \"thanks, buddy\" and then sneak off to check other sources for the real answer.

I've been indulging my obsession with the Collatz Conjecture and its all about Predecessors and Successors. So, this tattoo is very tempting!
FYI: Collatz is the simplest, hardest unsolved math problem. Take any positive natural number N. If even, divide by 2. If odd, multiply by 3 and add 1. The conjecture is that all sequences (no matter how high they may rise) will eventually return to 1. That is, there are no looping or infinitely rising sequences which has held true for trillions of trillions of numbers tested.
So, the lower predecessor of 34 is 11 and its only immediate successor is 17.
