SEMANTICS ALERT: The “best games” and “your favorite games” are not the same thing or interchangeable. “Best” has more of an objective connotation, where you need solid and measurable criteria to pit one versus many. “Favorite” can be pretty much anything and it can be subjective.

My childhood in particular was really rough at times, but I will always miss certain facets of that time in my life… like that trip home after school, which sometimes meant an arcade stop or other times meant cartoons after a long day.

The timing of having so many thoughts on the Nintendo Wii and the console’s anniversary being 6 weeks away is a bit annoying. There’s a lot I want to say, but it’s probably better to wait and put it all into a written piece for that time.

I’ve been thinking a lot– maybe more than I should– lately about the Atari VCS/2600. A lot about Activision games, like Megamania, Pitfall!, and River Raid… and about other third-party stuff. It’s the combination on simple play controls and high-score chasing I miss the most.

I haven’t finished Ace Combat 8 yet, but unless something drastic changes my mind late, I can’t see it moving out of B tier. Still good, but not great based on how it hit me.

@peteskerritt.com The original Air Combat is interesting from a “This is how it started?” standpoint, so early in the original PlayStation’s lifespan.

Ace Combat 3 is… divisive. Not helpful that the US version had its storyline completely fubared, but I just don’t like the game at all, gameplay included.

@peteskerritt.com Ace Combat 7 is also good fun, and checks all of the modern-day boxes. Looks good, sounds good, varying difficulty for varying skill levels, DLC if you want it.

Ace Combat 6 is… fine. Some ideas work, some don’t. The story (if you care about it) is LOL-worthy. Very “of its time” visually.

@peteskerritt.com I think others have said it, but the PlayStation 2 trilogy of Ace Combat games is really the best place to start for those looking to get into the series, playing them in release order (4, 5, Zero).

Ace Combat 2 is also a fun playthrough— though many will think it looks ugly by today’s standards.

@peteskerritt.com Wii serves as a bittersweet reminder of the good and the awful that internet connectivity for consoles has wrought. All of these missing/now-dead features were powered by the internet.

@peteskerritt.com See, while Wii gets fondly remembered (and rightly so) for Wii Sports and other notable games… many of the things that made the Wii experience what it was 20 years ago are dead.

@peteskerritt.com There’s some cool setpieces. Battles against crazy odds and powerful foes. Battles against ace squadrons nicely climb in difficulty from sortie to sortie. It’s white-knuckle sometimes, with tension that I legitimately feel and a sense of accomplishment when my team succeeds. It’s a good time for me.

@peteskerritt.com Then, of course, came the crash of rental chains. Hollywood Video wasn’t able to survive, on top of GameStop dominating the video game retail space. Game Crazy was on borrowed time, then no time. I was still sad to see it go, but sadder that potential turned into corpo-same-old.

@peteskerritt.com I’ve having fun when I’m in the air. There’s been some surprises, which is nice. Theatres of battle feel wider. Missiles are a little less accurate– even on the easiest difficulty– than in past games. This isn’t a bad thing, but it takes getting used to. Aircraft handling feels bulkier, too.
