@ReaderJohn When people talk about politics and/or ideology in an American context, I often feel like the words they use mean something different to them than they do to me. (For instance the people who hates “capitalism”. I always wonder what they mean be “capitalism” and what their alternative would be.)

I this case, I wonder what “democratic socialist” means. To me, there is a big difference between socialism, democratic socialism and european social democracy. While the latter may talk about socialism in their party programmes and make nods agains “capitalists”, in the end they are suporters of liberal democracy and free market economies. Socialists aren’t. The question is where “democratic socialists” fall on this scale.

I’d like to question that claim. This video is very informative as a whole and the rough math, starting at 14:52, says that Teslas with Full Self Driving is almost ten times more likely (per mile driven) to kill a human, as compared to an actual human driver.

Granted, the video is almost two years old and it’s possible that things have improved enormously the past 24 month, but I doubt it.

@manton Side note, today I showed the video to a Turkish friend and he agreed that the Swedish version sounded very fake. (He has lived in Sweden for 20+ years and speaks fluent Swedish.) However, when we listened to the Turkish version - which sounded fine to me since I don’t speak a word of Turkish - he said that had he not already known that there was AI involved he wouldn’t have thought that there was anything weird about the voice.

Maybe different languages are more or less complex for an AI to imitate, or maybe there’s more training data available for Turkish than Swedish, or a combination of the two.

@manton Please note that I’m currently in a very AI sceptic phase, so that might color my opinion here. With that said, I think it’s interesting that it works, kind of, but the uncanny valley is definitely there, both in terms of the words and the inflection of the voice. I file it in my brain under “cool, but what’s the point”.

@manton As a European with a life long love affair with the US, a love affair that is now definitely over, I think you are overly optimistic here. It’s probably going to take decades before Europe trusts the US again. Canada being annexed as the 51st state is probably, definitely, absolutely not an actual issue but here in Europe we have a well-founded fear of Russia and the US now clearly communicates that we can’t trust them to provide us any support. Article 5 of NATO might actually not mean anything anymore.

We, Europe, will learn from this and built up our own abilities for defense and for trade and we will sidestep the US. As Donald Tusk said, it’s silly idea in the long term that “500 million Europeans ask[s] 300 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians.” ‘Murica has lost so much of its soft power in the world, and that will only worsen for the next four years.

@JohnBrady I feel the exact same way. I’ve not lived in Ohio, nor anywhere else in the US, so I have no personal experience to compare Hillbilly Elegy to, but I really liked it and thought that Vance was an interesting person. When I wrote about the book in 2019, I praised him for being ”the old school type of conservative or republican, the kind that was more prevalent before the party was hijacked by a buffoon and those power-hungry enough to sell out every single principle they have as long as they feel like they can use the buffoon in question for their own personal gain. The kind that I respect.”

@ChrisJWilson In that case I don’t think there are anything you can do. I have the same situation with the comic books that I’ve bought, since my Kindle is a b&w e-reader that don’t work with comics.

Please note that the apps (and any physical Kindle device) will be able to continue to download and read the books. It’s the ability to download copies directly to your filesystem that disappears.
