Besides, stoicism is not my chosen way of being. Shutting down emotions are what cause me far more dangerous problems. Everyone is different, but men seem capable of stoic behavior. And then they go start wars. If it works for you great. The Mind/Body “problem” is a philosophical problem created by the Cartesian Duality Principle. Mind is not fact. It is theory. To have implied “mind” exists much less is separate from physiology and built this split into entire health care infrastructures is a disaster. Moreover, ten years ago we considered Serotonin a brain chemical. We now know 90% is produced in the gut! So even though our brains are not theoretical, the split is fiction. If someone is suffering symptoms, he or she is best served first by a physical checkup and medication/lifestyle review by a medical physician. Behavioral changes do not of themselves indicate a known disorder whether “mental” or not. Traumatic brain injuries, strokes, even urinary tract infections disrupt behavior. Here, a next step would be to have a full series of psychosocial assessment. What I would avoid until enough information is in would be pharmaceutical intervention as treatment, while may be helpful and needed, should be measured scientifically as much as possible. Either way, feeling unwell is just that: feeling unwell. To attach judgement without understanding is cruel and often wrong. If a woman is crying, is she therefore depressed? A yes answer is biased and unscientific. Finally and perhaps the most important piece? Individual instinct. I’d ask the individual (or self if it’s me) what I think is happening. Statistically, patients are usually more accurate as to sources of discomfort or suffering. I took your question literally as I am working toward a Ph.D. in computational cognitive and neurosciences. My colleagues work on AI, advanced robotics and big data - cognition and how humans collect and store thoughts and memories factor in to designing intelligence and learning into computer systems and networks. But my personal passion is to help all humans improve quality of life through adaptive technology. I had a lot of issues in family and self and began studying classic psychology to try and help them, and myself. Could not help them. Am learning ways to better help my own “crazy” as other people might call it. Also, great advice I was given to help cope in rough times was to speak to myself as I would another person in pain: With kindness, patience and forgiveness. We always will be our own worst enemies otherwise :). It’s taken decades for this “discreditation” to occur. As for “crazy” that word is used to describe so many people, ideas and emotional expression it becomes meaningless. Pure bias. Crazy is not a diagnosis. Another turn away from the psychotherapeutic models of the past century or so is the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in place of the “Talk Therapy” model once so prevalent.
