In online discourse, I see people quick to diagnose themselves, or others, as ADHD or “on the spectrum.” Maybe those people don’t have conditions at all — maybe they just have personalities.
\n
One example: A woman invited a male business associate to dinner as repayment for a professional favor he had done. As the dinner began, the man said, “I’m on the spectrum, so I need to ask — is this a date or a business dinner?” I thought to myself: Saying he’s “on the spectrum” to me implies he has low emotional intelligence. But his behavior seems quite the opposite to me. He perceived a potentially awkward situation and took a simple, easy and direct action to remove the awkwardness.
