I know from experience that if you ask people to follow you on another platform, mostly they don’t. So I’m not leaving Facebook anytime soon, though I want to. But they’re not investing in it anymore and it shows. Here I am on Tumblr\nThreads is surprisingly enjoyable. I read, but don’t post there. I want to reduce the number of social media platforms I’m active on. If I start posting to Threads and get likes and responses, I’d be more likely to feel hooked.\nI was losing interest in Twitter even before Elon bought it. I canceled my account a few months later, as a political gesture. I reactivated later because I occasionally want to check posts that require a login. During the interim, I lost all my followers. That’s fine – I have no interest in becoming active on Twitter again. I’d like to reduce the number of social platforms I’m active on, and Twitter seems like an easy one to stay away from.\nI like Reddit but posting there is a pain. A large percentage of my posts get deleted by moderators for reasons that seem silly to me. So I don’t bother posting much. I’m up to my neck in Facebook. I’d love if my connections there would move to more open platforms. I don’t see that happening. But I’m loath to get myself enmeshed in yet another silo, which is what X is.

I’ve been struggling with this as I’m reading the biography. His attitudes and actions on slavery were similar to Jefferson, who outright denounced slavery and tried to include a denunciation in the Declaration. And yet they both owned slaves. And yes, Washington freed his slaves on his death. And he treated them relatively well. But he still owned them up until then.

I don’t think there’s an explanation for this. It’s just how people are.

And yet Washington was also a great man, perhaps the greatest man of his century. Perhaps the greatest American President who ever was, and he has stiff competition for that title.

@manton I posted a 1,900-character post on Mastodon just now using the content warning as a headline, and it looked ok. The link attachment was marked as sensitive media (which it most definitely was not), so I will want to look into that.

Content warnings were initially intended as a means of warning users against emotionally triggering content (sex and violence but also faces that appear to make eye contact and images of food), as well as TV/movie spoilers (you already know this, of course), but I do now see them used on Mastodon just to mark content that many readers might not be interested in — for example, I just now saw one with a content warning something like “American politics, US Supreme Court.” So I think my idea is valid, to use the content warning to break the content of long posts.

It occurred to me this week that I like posting long posts to Mastodon but, paradoxically, I don’t like seeing them in my timeline, and that hiding most of the post behind a content warning would be a good solution. I have yet to try it.

And yes, converting the title to a content warning would be a good idea.

People don’t like clicking links when they’re scrolling a Twitter-like timeline. Rather than linking to long posts, a better solution is finding a way to show the body of a post while remaining in the timeline.

@manton Thanks! I also want to experiment with using content warnings on Mastodon to hide those long, 2000+ character posts. That’s a big lump to drop on people’s timelines.

And @ffmike raises a good point. I don’t care about like and boost counts. I don’t care whether that information is public so by all means hide it. I just want to see the likes on my own posts and see other people’s boosts.

I think if you supported likes, reposts and lists, I could migrate my Mastodon to Micro.blog for good. Same for Bluesky!

@manton @michaelgemar is right. Apple succeeds by taking clunky-but-somewhat-popular categories and making them better. Though I quibble with the inclusion of AppleTV on that list — it’s a hobby product for Apple, without mainstream appeal.

But the problem for Apple and other smart glasses vendors is bigger than that. Smart glasses and VR headsets are niche products. Most people don’t want them and don’t have a use for them. Their appeal is not to people, it’s to tech companies looking for a platform they can monopolize.
