There's no direct way to hide a thread, the nearest workarounds:
-Muting thread notifications (as you said)
-Filtering for thread's content (as you said)
-Muting accounts in the thread, which can be done on a timed temporary basis if you use the web interface or some third party apps when muting
-Unfollowing accounts making/receiving replies
