Augusta & Baldwin, Toronto, 2026\n\nI don’t use my Ricoh GRiiix all that much and so decided to shoot in it’s hard contrast profile, which mimics Daidō Moriyama’s style. He’s one of my favourite photographers but as much for the philosophy underlying his style — his use of \"are, bure, boke\" style, translated as \"grainy/rough, blurry, out-of-focus,\" is an aesthetic opposition to European photojournalist style that was closer to a realist presentation of the world surrounding the photographer. \n\nI’m….not shooting with Moriyama’s philosophy. I approach image making from a different perspective that lacks his particular philosophical guidestones. And so this is an experimental image, but the experiment is this: what is it like to use a photographer’s so-called style that is really an outward expression of their values and positionality in the world, in presenting one’s own photographic perspective?\n\nThis is not an image that will do much aside from torturing a few electrons in positioning bits this way or that way, to be seen by a few people. But as an experiment in a way of making an image I find it deeply uncomfortable and it reifies my disquiet in this mode even being available in Ricoh cameras. It feels like an attempt to crassly subvert and/or consume a style of photography that was in many ways opposed to the very thing being made.
