I’m really tempted to try out Vivaldi as my daily driver for a while. I’ve been pretty happy with Firefox for the last five years, but I like the look of its “power user” features like the highly customisable UI and support for LOTS of tabs. Nothing to lose by trying 😊

@jayeless support non-Chromium browsers - Firefox or LibreWolf please.

@rom I'm going to use whatever browser I feel like, man 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't support lazy developers refusing to test their stuff in anything but Blink, but their life choices are not on me. Firefox is fine and I may well go back to it, but their track record over the years of taking options away from users and forcing us to look up how to fix it through about:config leaves a sour taste. As far as I'm aware LibreWolf is anti-telemetry rather than pro-customisation. I just liked the idea of trying out a browser that's unashamedly pro-power user for a while 🤷🏻‍♀️

@jayeless Yeah, Vivaldi looks so good. I'm disheartened, though, watching Firefox slowly lose market. And interest from the developers. I still use it on Windows and my Android device. But I don't know how long I can stick to it.

@jayeless I tried it yesterday. It is very nice on the Mac. Lots and lots of options. But sadly it doesn't have an iOS app. And I rely on history syncing. Other than that, great software.

@jayeless Used to love Firefox for years and years and recently changed to Brave. Highly customisable UI and support for Lots of Tabs sound worth checking out, though.

@jayeless As someone who used to use Firefox as his sole browser for the longest time (even initially when I switched to the Mac), the direction Mozilla has gone is truly disappointing. They used to be staunch supporters of the open web, and now they’re staunch supporters of… well… something I guess?

@jayeless of course, you do you. :) Google is controlling the browser market and I think we need to stop that. I know Mozilla is such an ass, but what other option do we have? Personally, I use Safari most of the time, except when on Linux. Tried Vivaldi and I liked it - except that it is Chromium-based. I wish they'd move to another browser engine.

@pimoore @jayeless Mozilla has been doing a lot of questionable moves, including the recent Meta-collaboration, to stay afloat. I remember pitching in when they needed funds (and saw my name on the NYTimes full-page ad). Are donations not enough, that they had to alienate most of their users?

@rom @jayeless Unfortunately most corporations aren’t (if they ever were) about users anymore, rather profit and greed. Sadly there seems to be no political will to alter this course.

@pimoore @jayeless I agree. So sad, really.

@amit @pimoore Yeah, it is sad to see how far Firefox has fallen 😔 I still like the browser, and I do want them to stay relevant enough to keep a seat at the table, so to speak, when talking about the direction of the web. But the questionable decisions they keep making about their browser (or behind the scenes, like the recent Facebook/Meta thing or the crypto controversy before that) are hard to take.

@cdevroe Yeah, the lack of an iOS app might become an issue for me as well. Currently I'm still using Firefox on my iPhone. For me personally I think the "handoff" feature might be good enough, but we'll see. It's definitely not a full shared history.

@Stefanyeah Yeah, do it! Brave has never really appealed to me, but if you like it, Vivaldi should be pretty similar under the hood (both being built on Chromium) – just with their many UI improvements 😃

@rom Yeah, I sympathise with that. I definitely don't want Google to have a controlling stake in the web, either, but Firefox can't keep pushing users away and expect them to stay there just to stick it to Google 😔 Chromium is (slightly) broader than just Google, too – Microsoft contributes to it now they don't have their own engine any more, for example. I feel like Safari/WebKit is the main bulwark against Blink domination now, but I'd like Gecko to stay in the contest too. If a Vivaldi-like browser was built on Firefox (and maintained adequately, etc.) I'd have preferred to use that, for sure.

@jayeless I'm using Vivaldi right now and continue to be very confused that my tabs are so orderly and recognisable instead of one line of squished icons because I've grouped them in addition to my usual pinned tabs. XD

This split view thing will come in so handy, too, when I'm playing around with Worldbuilding sites.

@Stefanyeah Haha, yes, tab groups make life so much easier! (Another feature I'm still sad Firefox got rid of.) I can imagine split view being handy for me too – the use that popped into my head straightaway was keeping notes up on the screen while I play through a browser game, but I'm sure I'll find others too 😃

@jayeless @amit @pimoore @cdevroe @Stefanyeah I just wish that another entity will create a better Firefox, or Vivaldi shifts to Gecko. :)

@jayeless I didn't even remember/used those in Firefox. But I got used to those pinned tabs when Foxy introduced them.

There's the notes paneel thingy, too, that could be used for that. I already put one of my standard translation pages there.

The mentions of Mozilla pairing up with Meta further up the Conversation are rather unsettling. Guess I'll be keeping away from it in the future still. :(

@rom @jayeless @amit @cdevroe @Stefanyeah All this talk of alternative browsers makes me recall the days of using Camino on the Mac. That browser was like greased lightning, one of the cleanest and most lightweight I’ve ever used.

@rom I share that hope!

@Stefanyeah Yesss, the notes panel also looks handy. I don't think the Firefox/Meta collaboration is as bad as some people think (it seems to be about reducing advertisers’ ability to track individual users while still allowing them aggregate data about how many clicked on what ads), but it's not ideal either. Facebook is gross :(

@pimoore I wasn't using Mac at that time, but yeah, Camino looks like it was a nice browser 🙂 I do miss the days when browsers looked like native apps. I know I could use Safari for that, but it's not like the most important thing for me… I just miss it 😆
