I probably get more compliments on my $60 microphone and $90 boom arm than anything else in my life, so naturally I’m thinking about buying a $300 microphone I absolutely do not need.

@jsonbecker ATR2100, by any chance? Also, please tell me about your $90 boom arm, because my $15 one could be improved.

@jean that’s the one. I have a Rode PSA-1. Which appears to be $100 now? Or maybe I misremembered what I paid.

@jean @jsonbecker I’m looking into the best microphone setup to use with my M1 iPad, as I currently have a Blue Yeti but nothing to hook it up with as it’s not USB-C. I’m thinking I’ll have to find a powered dock of some kind, but I’d be happy for any feedback you both have if there’s a better setup (or even microphone).

@pimoore I had a Blue Yeti but honestly the 2100 with a boom, shock mount, and pop filter is a huge upgrade and costs about the same as the Yeti all together. I think the boom is really critical because most mics sound way better if you can position them correctly (and closely). Dynamic mics are better for voice because they need that proximity and so have way less room noise.

@jsonbecker I’ve had this concern with the Yeti, as the shock mount for it is very expensive and requires a solid boom arm as it’s such a heavy mic on its own (even without the mount). I’ve read numerous threads about people’s booms drooping with a Yeti attached.

If I can get by without needing a dock all the better, as it’s less clutter on my desk and I can still have the iPad powered through the Magic Keyboard USB connection. (I’m assuming you can have both that and a USB device plugged into the iPad at the same time)

@jsonbecker @pimoore I can rationalize new tech purchases with the best of them (5 new iPhones in 5 years, $200 of recording gear for one song) but the ATR2100 is just amazing. I can’t believe it was only $67. I’ve had it for four years. I had the Yeti before that and never liked it. I’m not sure what it would take for me to get a new mic, as long as this one still works…

@jean @jsonbecker Thank you both for the feedback, I’m going to research the ATR!

@pimoore @jsonbecker One last bit of data: I was so stressed that I would have to make major sound-dampening additions to my workspace in the new apartment over a noisy intersection. But the ATR2100 managed it like magic. For podcasting, I’m sure it’s as good as I ever need.

@jean @jsonbecker Well, if there was a higher praise you could give to a microphone, I’d be damned what it would be. Thanks Jean!
