To be clear, I don’t want to use ChromeOS, I was just looking into whether Chromebooks could be used as inexpensive Linux laptops.

@mdrockwell I haven’t heard anything about (Crostini?) in a long time, last I had read anything it was deep in a beta state and thee were some features that they weren’t sure were ever going to be possible — hardware acceleration and sound support I believe.

@mdrockwell Yes, it is apparently built in on some Chromebooks. You just have to turn Linux on. I found that info here. Good luck.

@pimoore my understanding is that it’s pretty good at this point. But I was actually considering just getting rid of ChromeOS and installing a proper Linux distro. From what I gather, it can be done. Not sure if I’ll actually go through with it, though. It seems like if you want halfway decent hardware in a Chromebook, you’re in used MacBook territory. And at that point, I’d rather just get a used 2015-ish MacBook Pro/Air.

@mdrockwell Oh definitely, and if you want the full-fledged Pixelbook model you’re at the same price or more depending which MacBook you go for.
