It’s pretty lame that you can’t add a custom search engine to Safari on iOS. I’m toying around with SearX and this might be the biggest hurdle.

@mdrockwell I have DuckDuckGo as default search engine, not sure if that helps. I can pick from Google, Yahoo, DDG, Ecosia, and Bing. If there’s a !Bang for SearX, it might help you…

@mdrockwell There is: !searx

@maique I have it set to DDG too. I have a selfhosted install of SearX that I'd like to try as my default for a bit, but without the ability to add a custom search engine, I'm out of luck. And unfortunately !Bang wouldn't be an option since I don't want my SearX to be used by others (for server resources reasons).

@mdrockwell I feared I was out of my depth with SearX, and I was 😔

@mdrockwell Is there no way to limit the access to the Searx instance on the server to your IP address?

@pimoore yes, but in order for something to be added to DDG as a !Bang, it needs to be submitted and approved. And I imagine they wouldn't approve something that's only accessible to me.

@mdrockwell ah I gotcha, too bad there isn’t a private API you could use that doesn’t have to be submitted.
