I joined a Discord channel thing. I survived. I think it’s kinda like a cross between forums and the old instant messengers (YIM, AIM, etc) and Slack dancing at the edge of the Abyss. Nice people tho, but young so I only understand about half of what is said.

@bradenslen I don't love Discord at all. Or Slack for that matter. Slack is less unpleasant, but so many open source and other groups I follow use Discord that I've kind of just rolled with it.

@jack I didn't know what to make of it when I first signed in TBH. I had the same feeling w/ seeing Slack for the first time. I don't know if Discord does this, but what I liked about forums was you eventually built a searchable knowledge base of past discussions and information. Plus forums lent themselves to longer form posts and replies.

Of course a lot depends on how the Discord Admin sets things up and who the members are. Honestly I thought it might be like Mastodon until I clicked through. Heh.

@bradenslen First thing I did was switch to the light theme so it felt less like a gamer chat room :). And yeah, a good forum using something like Discourse is a much better tool for anything other than unimportant chit-chat. IMO.

@jack @bradenslen Same here, I tried Discord briefly and don’t care for it one bit. I tolerate Slack at work but that’s as far as it will ever go. Apart from m.b. I’d rather have chat of any form on iMessage as my first choice, and Telegram/Signal as a second cross platform choice.

@peterimoore I guess I'm glad it's around as an alternative to Slack. I think it just shocked me because it wasn't what I expected. cc. @jack
