@bradenslen I am a fan of Nespresso + boiled water for Americanos because it’s so easy and relatively quick. But I have guilt over supporting Nestlé. I’ve been thinking of going back to a 3-cup espresso pot and preground coffee. (I don’t want it to be too slow!) ☕️

@bradenslen I’m with you in spirit, but pragmatically it’s the slow part that gets me. Maybe when my current Keurig dies.

@macgenie Nespresso! I'm jealous. A buddy of mine has a Nespresso machine and it makes great espresso and lungos. When I looked into them you had to join a club and stuff. Too complicated. But in the morning I like a big mug of hot coffee.

It's not that slow. I multitask while making coffee. Put pot on, go get dressed. Water hot pour in water, go put laptop on porch. Done. It's just not as fast as Keurig.

@rmcrob LOL. It's really not that slow. Just slow compared to Keurig. I multitask getting ready for the day while coffee heats and drips.

@macgenie I have been utterly ruined for any other coffee by the Aeropress, plus the Italian espresso roast beans I buy in bulk.

@bradenslen You can only buy the capsules from Nespresso, true. It’s not really complicated but there’s no competition. Otherwise I’d have no Nestlé guilt, because the machine itself is a hand-me-down from 10 years ago!

@kfitz I had an Aeropress once, but I must have been doing it wrong. I was always worried about the “pressing” step culminating in a big mess, and the coffee tasted acidic to me.

@macgenie Curious what your guilt is over supporting Nestlé. I do the exact same thing for Americanos. I am happy at least the pods are recyclable with Nespresso.

@macgenie If it tasted acidic you either: brewed for too long, with too hot of water, or the grind was too fine. When the beans are very oily, sometimes using two filters helps.

@kfitz Same here, love the Aeropress!

@michaelfransen Yes, I recycle the capsules too.

When I was in college, there was a huge scandal about Nestlé’s infant formula marketing practices in the Third World.

Closer to home, they tried to build a huge water bottling plant in the Columbia River Gorge.

They are definitely one of those huge multinational companies whose profit motives we need to be wary of.

@kfitz what bulk beans do you buy?

@macgenie in the uk supermarkets sell own brand capsules. Mix of macchinetta, aeropress and filter cone for me.

@macgenie Recycling capsules is still way worse than never using. They have to be transported, sorted, and remade. We often value a tiny gain in speed and convenience, over a much bigger environmental impact.

For speed, how about keeping a jug of cold-brew in the fridge, and microwaving a cup at a time?

@macgenie Yeah, the Aeropress takes a little getting used to, but it should absolutely not come out tasting acidic. I think that can happen if it's not pressed through quickly enough.

@joshuapsteele Coffee Bean Direct's Italian Espresso Roast. I order 5lbs at a time and keep it in the freezer until just before I grind. It's awfully good.

@kfitz @macgenie Having owned a succession of personal espresso-makers, mostly from DeLonghi, I've been sold on the Aeropress for the past 4 years. I buy ready-ground coffee, though, and use it too quickly for it to lose its flavour.

@macgenie Back before the Keurigs, I had pod machines. I discovered my all time favorite coffee: Fratello French Saigon Dark Roast. Fratello is Canadian and for a long time they quit shipping to the US after the pod crash. I need to see if they do now.

@mistercharlie Thanks for the excellent point about recycling. I should try having cold brew on hand. I'm also looking at buying a new espresso pot.

@macgenie Careful! Cold brew is very addictive, and it’s easy to drink way too much. Ask me how I know ;)
