Saw the subtitled version of Totoro last night at Alamo Drafthouse. Such a pure movie, suitable for anyone. As movies get more and more expensive to make, feels like we’re losing anything not written by a committee forced to follow tried-and-true formulas. 🍿
@manton My grandchildren are getting old enough for Totoro, and even though they can't read they will only see the subtitled version. I'll provide commentary as needed.
@JMaxB There are so many scenes with little or no dialog anyway. I like the original dub, circa 2002, which is the first version I ever saw. Disney completely redid the dub when they acquired the rights, so the older one only exists on eBay now.
@manton I agree that some dubs are better than others, but I want to pass on to them my global disapproval of dubbed movies.
@KimberlyHirsh @jmaxb Yep. The Disney dub is good. I think most people probably prefer whichever they saw first. 🙂 I’m just a little bummed the old one is essentially lost if you go all-in on streaming.
