I just exported my Feedbin subscriptions from NetNewsWire and then reimported to iCloud.

Seems that I could now cancel Feedbin.

Anyone know why that might be a bad idea?

@rcrackley yes - thanks for responding - I have to say I like it - but castro is my podcasts, Twitter is Twitter when I remember and YouTube is YouTube .. so really using it only for ‘proper’ RSS …. am purging subscriptions Feedbin might be a casualty .. I already reduced it to monthly - so I can compare side by side for a while.

@JohnPhilpin I have been from RSS service to iCloud and back again. I don't think that it is a case of good or bad idea, just what your needs are. Here are my reasons for being a feed service, in this case Feedbin like you,

  • Portability. Yes I can export OPML files between feed readers, but I find just logging onto a service much easier.
  • Faster. The updated feeds are there pretty much as soon as I open the reader.
  • Accessible from many places - web, readers, mobile, desktop, etc
  • I did find that iCloud missed some posts that a given site had decided to publish and delete (but was still of interest to me) between my logins
  • I decided that I do like receiving my newsletters in Feedbin

Those are the initial reasons that come to mind and why I am with a RSS service.

@JohnPhilpin I’ve been on FeedWrangler, then Reeder (with FW service), then Unread (with FW service) then Reeder again (with FW service), then NetNewsWire with iCloud), then Unread (the latest version with Unread Cloud). For Twitter I still use NetNewsWire. Apple Podcasts for podcasts.

@JohnPhilpin Oh and you mention podcasts. Having bounced around podcast apps, I like Feedbin's new podcast app "Airshow," simple and no frills. @rcrackley reviewed it recently.

@odd @JohnPhilpin have you looked at Newsblur for this?

@joelhamill I’ve heard the name, but never checked it out. I’m on annual plan with Unread now, so I’ll stay there for a while. Twitter via NNW is just okay, (and free).

@odd I use it as my sync engine. Read my feeds using the Newsblur app on Android and the web and NNW on the Mac. It's a nice little RSS reader that works well with Twitter.

@joelhamill I seem to remember it vaguely now… I meant to check it out years ago. Well, I’m very happy with my current solution so far, but I’ll (try to) keep this in mind for the future, thanks for reminding me!

@joelhamill thankyou - just did - and not for me. I have a LOT of feeds that I use folders to filter what I mainly read. Their solution would be expensive for the number I have.

My thanks to you all for the RSS thoughts and recommendations.

In the end - observations …

1) I might have too many feeds - but feedbin handles them - and it works for me

2) iCloud for RSS synching is not ready for prime time - at least for my use case (slow - miscounts - not all feeds found)

3) Other solutions for my feedcount is cost prohibitive

Bottom line - sticking with Feedbin - and now moving on to the second part of the experiment.

For the same reason as looking at using iCloud for RSS - I have been giving Apple’s podcast another whirl (primarily a Castro user - but dabbled with Overcast).

I think I have just about decided that Apple Podcasts is not for me

1) slow synchs - again!

2) playback interrupts -

3) hard to play the one you want - without work

4) and my phone hard drive has just announced that it is full - I usually have circa 100Gig empty!

BUT - as part of the RSS world - noting David’s reference re Airshow - now going to try that out. I tend to keep my ‘types’ separately …

i use stoopinbox/substack apps for newsletters

i don’t pull twitter into feedbin

podcasts are podcasts

video are videos

etc etc

but - people can change - can’t they?

@rcrackley actually it’s not really the best in class argument .. more my mind … my podcast time is different to my reading .. to my watching .. so keeping those mind exercises in different places.
