I wish Elvis was here to make a cover version of “Conga” by Gloria Estefan.

@odd We had an ongoing thing for years in high school where we would speculate about which 80s pop songs Elvis might have sung in his schmalzy and bombastic Vegas act if he had lived. The only suggestions I can recall now are: Duran Duran's “Rio,” Toto’s “Africa,” Steve Miller’s “Abracadabra,” and The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.”

I didn’t really think about this until years later, when I first saw Paul Anka’s brilliantly bonkers cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

@rnv Those would fit him well for the period he was in then. I have never heard this version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, now must check it out. I have heard Smells Like Nirvana by Weird Al though.

@odd @rnv Have you heard any of Dread Zeppelin? Not too good, but interesting that they make covers of Led Zeppelin as Elvis, with reggae rhythms.

@rnv Sandra Bernhard does a bit about Liza Minnelli’s Vegas “tribute to alternative music” version of Black Hole Sun and it cracks me up every time I hear it. I have no idea if she ever really sang it in Vegas, but it’s a good comedy bit.
