Apple makes it tough to download older versions of macOS. For example, if you want El Capitan, you can't make a bootable installer unless you do so from a machine that can run it. But what if that machine's drive fails and you need to install macOS on a new drive?

@mdrockwell They do allow a network install, which gives you an option to download whatever shipped with the device. You'll have to do a network recovery boot for that though, and I am unsure about the key combo (don't have a browser avail to check atm).
