@jamesshelley Very interesting post. I mostly agree with your last paragraph—fundamentally, the question is about liturgies, practices, whether or not supernatural beliefs undergird those practices. But your phrase “sharing ideas,” to my mind, over-intellectualizes the matter.

@jamesshelley From my experience, it seems the strength of community you ascribe to religion is only true where that religion is a minority. Protestants in Ireland provide strong community, a role mirrored by Catholics in UK. Judaism everywhere save Israel, where it divides.

@jamesshelley Most people like to identify with the heros in stories. White Christian America does not identify with the true heros of the New Testament and so to become heroic they consider themselves persecuted. It's an ego driven (it's all about me) approach to faith.
