@mdhughes huh. curious to find out what linux did to you. i simply can't imagine loathing a tool, it seems overly broad to me.

@dgold In 2005, I tried to get xmms to play music without skipping, while also having KCal alerts play a sound. After a week of fighting, I bought a Mac mini and shut off my Linux box for good.

@mdhughes so, let me get this straight - over a decade ago, you tried to get a notoriously bad and non-standard GTK-based audio player to work in a non-GTK KDE instance, and it didn't work. Based on that one week's experience, you loathe and despise everything about Linux?

@dgold xmms was the only media player that didn't stutter in the entire history of Linux, which I'd been using for a decade+. KDE had the least-bad desktop. It is fundamental incompetence of Linus et al that nothing works together.

@mdhughes I agree that there are serious problems in desktop Linux, which is why I havent used it in years. I use it on servers all day every damn day, and everything works together perfectly. I am still bewildered as to how this week long traumatic event makes you loathe and despise a perfectly useable, useful and stable OS.

@dgold It wasn't just the one thing, there was a decade+ of frustration with it, but that's what loosed my blood-dimmed tide of hate. Everything on Linux desktop is a malevolent practical joke. As a server, it's garbage compared to BSD, but it's standard, and not my problem.

@dgold I dare you to spend even a year using Linux on the desktop, and see if you don't swear vengeance as well.

@mdhughes I used Linux as my sole desktop OS from Slackware '96 until 2015. After slacking a few years, I switched to debian woody in 2002, and have been running it since, even partook in debian-legal for a while.

@dgold So you're in a good place to actually address the on-topic of my post: Where are the front-end Linux devs who don't suck goat anuses? Why don't they write any useful software? Because they don't seem to exist.

@mdhughes because they are writing actually useful software, and not bells-and-frippery bullshit. Things like routing software, dev-ops stuff. People for whom computers are a very specific tool.

@dgold Front-end end-user apps are useful! They're what people, real human beings, actually interact with.
