Kiki’s Delivery Service was the first Miyazaki film I watched, in 1998 when I found it on VHS. We have since watched the first DVD release many times. Now with HBO Max… I’ll admit I really miss the songs from Disney’s early cut of the film. 🧹

@manton we just watched that for the first time as a family last week. Miyazaki is so, so good.
@manton I love that movie. Princess Mononoke in Japanese with no subtitles was my first Miyazaki, and even not being able to understand the language, the storytelling was so beautiful and moving.
@Alcedine Visually it's so stunning I can imagine the impact even without understanding the dialog. I think Mononoke might've been the first one I saw in a movie theater.
@manton @Alcedine based on your recommendations I made Princess Mononoke the next Studio Ghibli movie to watch last night. With the movies now on HBO Max, I plan to slowly catch up on those I haven’t seen and rewatch those I have.
I found the animation of Princess Mononoke so visually rich and the story line having so much depth. A real treat for Sunday evening.
@crossingthethreshold @Alcedine Glad you enjoyed it! As I rewatch them (including a couple I missed) I've also been following along with the Overly Animated podcast, which is doing their own Ghibli rewatch series.
@manton Thank you for the podcast recommendation. I’ll take a listen.
I was looking for Grave of the Fireflies. I haven’t seen it, see that it is on the podcast but cannot find it on HBO Max. It seems from this article that due to distribution rights, it missed out on HBO inclusion. Apparently it is on Hulu, which I don’t use, or for rent or purchase in the iTunes Store.
@crossingthethreshold Grave of the Fireflies is incredible but also tragic, and I haven't seen it in over 20 years. Probably time for me to watch it again.
